Randy Livingston won't return as Stampede head coach

The Idaho Stampede coaching position remains vacant, but the search has been narrowed to three finalists - none of which is former coach and player Randy Livingston.

The Portland Trailblazers and Stampede entered into a shared operations agreement this summer, in which Portland controls all basketball operations in Boise.

The Blazers organization opened all basketball staff positions to applicants new and current. A Stampede source said Livingston was in the mix initially to retain his head coaching position, but did not make the cut to three finalists.

There's no firm word on who the three finalists for the job are, but the Detroit Free Press has reported Pistons assistant Bill Pope is one, and a source has told KBOI-TV that Austin Toros assistant coach Taylor Jenkins is another. Jenkins was also a finalist for the Sioux Falls Skyforce head coaching job according to the Argus Leader. The Skyforce hired former Stampede coach Joel Abelson last week.

Buck Harvey of the San Antonio Express newspaper reported Friday that Livingston was a candidate to join Gregg Popovich's staff as a Spurs assistant coach.

Livingston won the 2007-2008 D-League Championship as a player for former coach Bryan Gates. Bob MacKinnon replaced Gates for a single season before Livingston was hired prior to the 2010-2011 season.

In two seasons, Livingston led Idaho to a 45-55 record and missed the playoffs both years.
