Fish sale in progress in Ottawa County - Blade Outdoors

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District is giving area pond owners a chance to enhance the stock in their waters with its annual fish sale. The sale runs through Sept. 28. The fish available at the sale are bluegill, channel catfish, fathead minnows, largemouth bass, yellow perch, redear sunfish and white amur, more commonly known as grass carp. These carp are native to Asia but are sold in Ohio only as sterile fish that are incapable of reproduction. They are used in ponds to control vegetation -- preferring to eat leafy, rooted aquatic plants such as pondweed and coontailand -- but they will also eat floating duckweed, green algae and even cattails. The fish supplied for the sale come from Fender?s Fish Hatchery in Baltic, Ohio. A tank truck will arrive at the soil district office at 240 W. Lake Street, Oak Harbor, on Thursday, Oct. 4 and fish that have been ordered during the sale will be distributed from 2-4 p.m. All fish must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. Order forms are available by calling 419-898-1595 or visiting the soil district office during regular business hours.
