Why to Build Green

Building green is a huge trend right now and not just because it's "in." There are a variety of reasons as to why you should choose to build green if you are having a custom home builder create your dream home this summer. Here are three of the most important reasons why you should build green.

Environmental Benefits

The first and foremost reason that you should choose to build green is because of the inherent environmental benefits to building green. 16 percent of U.S greenhouse gas emissions are generated from energy used in our homes according to the EPA. This number could be greatly reduced if everyone converted to green building technologies. Green building also increases air and water quality as well as reducing the creation of waste. It also helps to conserve quickly depleting natural resources.

Economic Benefits

Green building has many economic benefits. The main economic benefit being that green building can reduce annual utility costs by up to $400. It also works to expand the market for green products and services, linking them closer and closer to mainstream building practices. Homes that are custom built with environmentally safe practices also provide higher property values.

Social Benefits

Green building provides many social benefits with the most important being improved health. Green building practices promote the use of nontoxic materials and paints. Green building also takes other steps to increase air and water quality. Not only does building green provide health benefits but it can also provide aesthetic benefits as green built homes often have an environmentally friendly ambience about them that is not typical of an average home. The last key social benefit is merely that fact that living in a green home feels good. It feels good to know that you are helping the environment and it also feels good to tell your friends that your are doing your part to save the environment. With this knowledge you should go out and tell your contractor that you want to build your new home green!
