Consumers More Excited for iPhone 5 Than iPad Mini

Apple Sept 12 Invite

The idea of Apple unveiling a smaller version of the iPad next week is exciting, but consumers are more eager to hear about the next-gen iPhone, according to a new survey from online shopping site PriceGrabber.com.

In the survey of 1,740 U.S. online shopping consumers, 34 percent of respondents said they would prefer that Apple debut the iPhone 5 at its Sept. 12 media event, as expected, rather than a so-called iPad mini. Twenty-eight percent are hoping Cupertino will unveil the much-rumored 7-inch iPad, and an optimistic 38 percent are hoping to hear about both.

At this point, all signs are pointing to an iPhone 5 launch next week. There were reports that Apple might also unveil an iPad mini and the next-gen iPod touch, but recent rumors claim that those gadgets will get their own event in October. Daring Fireball's John Gruber, who is largely considered to be on top of all things Apple, speculated that Apple doesn't want to release two highly anticipated gadgets at the same time.

Meanwhile, in the PriceGrabber.com survey, 21 percent of respondents said they plan to actually purchase an iPhone 5, while 13 percent expect to buy an iPad mini. Of those planning to buy the new iPhone, 16 percent said they would purchase it within the first week of its release and 19 said they would get it within a month.

Analysts have been predicting that the iPhone 5 could be one of Apple's biggest product launches of all time. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated on Tuesday that Apple could possibly sell up to 10 million iPhone 5 units in the first week.

Of those planning to buy the iPhone 5, 50 percent said they are most interested in the device for its new features. Thirty-four percent said they have been waiting to switch to an iPhone from another brand and want the latest version.

The new iPhone will likely include a larger, 4-inch screen and 4G LTE connectivity. PCMag will be in San Francisco on Sept. 12 for the 10 a.m. event, so stay tuned for all the details.
