As an industry standard communication security technology, SSL sees to it that the online transactions are carried out without risk to the user?s or company?s security. The encrypted link it establishes connects the browser and a web server.
The user who wants to activate the SSL on the web server has to enter the necessary information pertaining to his or her particular website and company. Two cryptographic keys which will subsequently encrypt the data will be generated following the abovementioned procedure. Those two keys go by the names of Private Key and Public Key for easier identification.
The SSL creates a link which guarantees that the information relevant to the online transaction are kept confidential. An SSL certificate which is a prerequisite in establishing SSL on the web browsers is the one that allows the encryption of the sensitive data to take place. The certificate displays the domain name, company name as well as address of the certificate owner among other pertinent information. Moreover, it acts as the recipient?s distinctive identification. A certificate authority validates the certificate owner?s identity to check whether the latter deserves to be given the certificate.
The key indicator works to notify whether the session is protected by SSL or not. The browser spots an expired SSL certificate by way of retrieval. The procedure will similarly reveal whether such certificate was given by a trusted certificate authority. It similarly confirms if the site that uses the certificate is the one which is technically regarded as the recipient. Any discrepancy appearing in the process will produce a notification that there is no SSL security at work.
Originally developed by the company known as Netscape, this communication security technology has and continues to gain popularity by protecting the confidential business transactions made online.
