Flight attendants call police on unruly children

The hazards of flying with kids: Flight attendants on Alaska Airlines call police after two unruly children refused to stay in their seats or buckle their seat belts.

The crew of a Skywest-operated Alaska Airlines plane asked Port of Portland police to meet their incoming flight from Long Beach, Calif., after two unruly children refused to stay in their seats and buckle their seat belts on Tuesday (March 27).

Airline spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey told Northwest Cable News (NWCN) that the flight crew tried repeatedly to get the children -- aged 3 and 8 and traveling with their parents ? to stay in their seats, and that the pilot radioed ahead and asked for authorities to meet the plane when it touched down at Portland International Airport. Ms. Lindsey also told NWCN that when the plane pulled up to the gate, the family was first off the plane and met by Port of Portland authorities. They were not charged with any crime.

Lindsey says port police talked with the family and an Alaska Airlines supervisor then talked to the family about the need to comply with federal air regulations that children must remain buckled in their seats for safety.

The spokeswoman says the supervisor then escorted the family to make their connecting Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Seattle. Lindsey says that flight was uneventful.

She declined to release any additional information about the family, citing privacy concerns.

In February,? a family with a 2-year-old who threw a tantrum over being seated with a seat belt was removed from a Jet Blue plane for delaying a flight from the Turks and Caicos islands to Boston.

'Hunger Games': Why The Box-Office Odds Are In Its Favor

Riding high off its $150 million debut, experts predict that 'Hunger Games' isn't going to slow down anytime soon.

MTV News reported earlier this week that "The Hunger Games" opening-weekend sales surprised box-office experts, and we can see why. They originally projected a $70 million debut for the dystopian film. What actually happened was a $150 million weekend that propelled the film to the third-highest opening weekend ever.

That sparks the question: How will the movie fare its second weekend?

The film's debut dominated the sales of the one movie everyone was comparing it to: "Twilight." The vampire franchise's initial film brought in $69 million its first weekend and quickly declined from there. Will "The Hunger Games" suffer the same fate? Phil Contrino from BoxOffice.com doesn't think so.

" 'Hunger Games' is holding up very well. It's quite clear by now that it's not going to suffer from a sharp decline the way that 'Twilight' did," he said. "The reason for that is the fact that adults are into it and they don't always rush out opening weekend." BoxOffice.com is predicting $72 million this weekend — $2 million above predictions for its debut. Contrino continued, " 'The Hunger Games' definitely has a shot at hitting $400 million domestically. It's a great accomplishment for the first film of a franchise to hit that mark."

Gitesh Pandya from Box Office Guru agrees. "Overall, 'Hunger Games' looks on track to finish its U.S. run with $350 to $400 million, which would be higher than the first 'Twilight' and 'Harry Potter' films." He commented that the movie ended its first full week with about $190 million, which is a new record for a non-sequel. "I expect it to easily hold onto the box-office crown this weekend with sales in the neighborhood of $70 million."

While "Wrath of the Titans" and "Mirror, Mirror" aren't slated to surpass "Hunger Games" this weekend, Contrino thinks next weekend will be more of a race. "It'll be interesting to see whether or not 'Titanic 3D' or 'American Reunion' will take it down. It's going to be close." Pandya disagrees, "The April lineup is not too strong, so 'Hunger Games' may just remain #1 for three or four weeks total." The rest of the year, however, gives them some competition. "It may not end the year as 2012's top-grossing film as both 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'The Avengers' has the potential to become bigger blockbusters that play to broader audiences."

Spike Lee and Geraldo: Why is a good apology so hard to find?

The number of reported public apologies has skyrocketed recently, yet the quality of those apologies is plummeting. The trend appears to have captured Spike Lee and Geraldo Rivera.

Public?apologies are so common these days that?multiple websites have sprung up just to keep track of who is asking forgiveness of whom. Effectiveapologies.com, for instance, has a running ?apology of the week,? and the just-launched terribleapologies.tumblr.com?ranks the worst of them.

This week alone, Geraldo Rivera and Spike Lee are in the apology corner being assessed, evaluated, and rated on the details of their infraction and the effectiveness?and sincerity of their public efforts to make amends.

This?critical scrutiny of public manners leads to?some obvious?questions about why we are seeing such an extended effort to recover after making a highly visible faux pas: Why does it seem so hard to?apologize these days ? have we all forgotten simple?early lessons about how to say ?sorry??

?We are in a pandemic of bad behavior,? says Dr. Aaron Lazare, chancellor and dean?emeritus of the University?of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and author of the 2004 book, ?On Apology.??

He has?studied the frequency of?apologies in published news reports from 1900 to the present day and says since the 1980s, ?the number of apologies has tripled.??But, he adds, the effectiveness and sincerity of those apologies has?plummeted.

?Most of these people simply want to have their cake and eat it too,? he says, noting that the key to a genuine apology is humility and restoration of dignity for the offended party.

?What we?re seeing now is most of these apologies are simply efforts at self-justification and an attempt to show how brilliant they really are, rather than any thought about the victim,? who more often than not, ends up being blamed,?he adds.

Mr. Rivera has spent the past?week fending off?criticism of his efforts to apologize for his comments?that the Florida teenager Trayvon Martin might not have been shot had he not been wearing a hoodie.

Spike Lee, meanwhile, has been knocked for merely tweeting his apologies to a?Florida couple whose address he mistakenly passed along as being the home of the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed?the Florida teen.

The 24/7 media culture is partly responsible for the explosion of apologies, says Ari Kohen, an associate professor of political science at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

A hyper-connected online culture means more and more opportunities to say or do something offensive, he notes. This also means that ?more and more people are watching, listening, and most importantly ?sharing? the offensive thing that someone has said or done,? he says via e-mail, adding, ?so we're seeing the offensive statement or action more than perhaps we would have, which yields more calls for apology, which in turn yields more and more terrible apologies.?

Professor Kohen and a student?launched the terribleapologies blog two days ago in response to?Rivera?s apology quagmire, with the intent of studying just how bad an apology can be, he says.

?It?s tempting to think that these bad apologies don't matter for the people who make them,? he says, citing both Rivera and conservative radio show host Rush Limbaugh, who?issued what many dubbed a non-apology?after calling a Georgetown University law student a ?slut? and a ?prostitute.??

?That must be what Rush Limbaugh and Geraldo Rivera are hoping ? but I think that the public won't be so fast to forget. Indeed, with social networking, my sense is that a bad public apology can hang around for a really long time and can have fairly serious adverse effects (like the campaign targeting Limbaugh's sponsors, for example). Indeed, there's more interest in bad apologies right now than I might have thought,? he says.

The polarization of public life has made it harder than ever to find the space for real repentance, reform or?forgiveness, says Conservative Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, who is running for Congress in New Jersey.

?I?ve long thought Elton John had it right when he said sorry is the hardest word,? he says, but a growing culture of meanness is making it harder. ?Someone makes a mistake and we carve them up with knives,? he says, adding, ?Do we really want to live in a world where?people can make one mistake and that?s it??

It's Spring! So here's a Tip Sheet from TheMoldstore.com that can ...

Giving a home or yard a fresh look has never been easier? or less expensive. An amazing new trend in home improvement is homeowners making their own pavers, stones, and other concrete building products. And theyre made right at home using stone molds from companies like TheMoldStore.com and with bags of concrete from the local building supply store.

Port Charlotte, Florida (PRWEB) March 29, 2012

The mould concept and making things with moulds has been around for thousands of years. But until recently, there were few available moulds on the market for the serious home improvement do-it-yourselfer. Until a few years ago, one had to buy expensive, mass-produced, cookie-cutter concrete pavers or stone for most any project. And unfortunately, many times the money would run out quicker than the space where the stones or pavers were needed! That has changed. There are now mould companies that sell directly to the do-it-yourself consumer and home handyman and handy woman, like TheMoldStore.com.

When thinking of remodeling, landscaping, or home improvement projects using stone, brick or pavers, here are a few benefits of using concrete moulds to make custom-colored stone, instead of buying common stone from a retailer.

1. Increase the Value of any Home for Pennies.

Most average-priced homes built today have a concrete walk, a macadam driveway, and maybe a poured concrete patio or wood deck outside. Folks rarely choose stone or brick designs for their homes due to the cost?despite the fact that stone lasts virtually forever and adds greatly to the worth of the home. With that said, making walkway or patio pavers, or designing and installing a custom cobblestone paver driveway using molds can greatly enhance the look and value of a home. Want to create a raised flower bed in the yard? Want to build a decorative stone wall with concrete block and cover it with stone veneer made with moulds? Landscape stone adds uniqueness to a home while providing long-lasting benefits to be enjoyed now and by future generations. And now it can be done for pennies on the dollar using concrete moulds.

2. Create Custom Designs and Colors

Any stonework can enhance a home or yard decor; but imagine creating stone designs right at home in a choice of colors?and for pennies each! With concrete stone moulds, color can be added to the concrete mix as desired. And there are hundreds of choices and varieties of mold types, shapes, styles and sizes to choose from. This enables the producer to create truly unique stones and pavers that the neighbors will be envious of.

3. Making Stone is Easy

Manufactured stone and pavers are easier to make at home with molds than one might think, since they come with specific instructions. No special equipment or tools are needed either. A shovel, five-gallon bucket, and an inexpensive plastic tub or wheelbarrow to mix in, is all that?s needed. If moulds are ordered from a reputable stone mold company, making professional looking stones and pavers will take little effort to accomplish. And company support will be available should it be needed. Quality moulds are durable and can be used over and over, so fewer can be purchased to get started. Yet many stones or pavers can be made with them. Its so easy- even the kids can help!

4. Dont be Limited to Outdoor Projects

Another benefit is that the stone can be used indoors as well. Build a gorgeous rock fireplace. Create a stone floor entrance in the foyer. Add stones to a plain wall to enhance the look, feel, and richness of a room. With a little imagination and desire, anything is possible. And making stone is not limited to men. According to John Panagos, President of TheMoldStore.com, more than 60% of our customers are women. And very few of our customers have worked with molds or concrete, before making concrete products with our moulds and instructions.

5. Save Money on Projects Calling for Manufactured Stone

Possibly the greatest benefit of all is that hundreds to thousands of dollars can be saved by making stones or pavers at home. Save as much as ninety-percent of the cost of retail outlet pavers and stone. The price of building materials goes up and down regularly. But the price of bags of concrete mix have stayed relatively inexpensive and constant. Concrete stone molds enable just about anyone to complete a stone project at a fraction of the cost of purchased stones.

Once a homeowner becomes familiar with how to make stone using moulds, friends and neighbors may want to pay to have some made for them too. What started as a project, could literally turn into a small home business without realizing it! Get started today by going online to view what can be made with ?concrete stone molds?, or visit TheMoldStore for complete information. They?ve been in the business of helping consumers for over twenty years.

U.S. says Bay Area delta's longfin smelt could become extinct

Federal biologists have concluded that another native fish of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is headed toward extinction, underscoring the region's severe environmental problems.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Thursday that it has determined that longfin smelt in the delta deserve Endangered Species Act protections. But the finding won't expand restrictions on the delta's water operations because the agency is simply designating the fish a candidate for listing.

The longfin is joining 251 other species across the country that the service deems in peril but that are in line behind higher-priority listings.

The move is a reversal for the wildlife service, which in 2009 denied a petition to list the San Francisco Bay-delta longfins, saying they weren't distinct from other longfin populations on the West Coast.

In a legal settlement with two environmental organizations, the agency conducted more research and concluded that ocean currents and the small fish's limited swimming abilities kept the bay-delta longfins from mingling with other groups, making them a discrete population in danger of extinction.

"It's about time," said Gary Bobker, program director of the Bay Institute, one of the groups that sued the government. But without actual listing, he said the fish's prospects won't improve.

It is not clear what, if any, additional protections would follow listing, since biologists attribute the plunge in longfin numbers to many of the same conditions hurting its relative, the delta smelt, which enjoys endangered species protections that have restricted delta pumping.

Those factors include decreased freshwater flows, pollution from a large regional wastewater treatment plant and an invasive clam that consumes the plankton that are a major smelt food source.

Fish and wildlife officials said mortality at the big delta pumps is less of a problem for longfins than delta smelt and that the seasonal flow requirements of the two species are somewhat different. Bobker said that could mean that additional restrictions on water diversions are necessary to save the longfin.

Distinguished from other smelt by their long pectoral fins, longfins are more tolerant of ocean water than delta smelts and swim farther west, into San Francisco Bay and beyond. They were once among the most abundant fish in the bay-delta system, but their numbers are a fraction of what they were 25 years ago.

Knockout of the week: Michael McDonald takes out Alex Soto

The good news for Miguel Torres? At UFC 145, he will have his first fight since getting cut, then rehired by the UFC. The bad news? It's against Michael McDonald, a bantamweight barely old enough to buy beer in the U.S. McDonald is on a seven-bout winning streak, and in his last fight, he did this:

Torres is one of the most experienced bantamweights in the UFC. At 31, he has 44 fights under his belt. The former WEC champ is 2-1 in the UFC, with the loss coming in a tight decision to Demetrious Johnson.

McDonald is a tough up-and-comer, while Torres is an established power at 135 lbs. Who will take this fight? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

US military wants to hack foreign game consoles

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

74052702.jpg

(Image: Nick Veasey/Getty Images)

Thinking of selling your video game console on eBay? Watch out, it could end up in the hands of the US military. The US navy has just contracted a company called Obscure Technologies to buy up second-hand consoles and develop computer forensic tools for extracting data stored on the hard drives.

The contract, published earlier this week, tasks the company with purchasing consoles from outside the US "in a manner that is likely to result in their containing significant and sensitive information from previous users", then providing tools for extracting information along with any data it finds and a report on the methods used. Obscure Technologies apparently has experience in cracking video game hardware, as the company's lead scientist previously reverse-engineered the original Xbox. UK researchers have also hacked consoles to investigate game piracy.

Why is the US military interested in combing through your saved games, though? It could be that the navy is checking Gamerscores to recruit video-game-trained future soldiers, but it's more likely interested in extracting any sensitive information exchanged through the messaging services found in modern consoles.

British tabloid The Sun recently reported that "terrorists" are using games like Call of Duty as "training tools". That's highly unlikely, unless al-Qaida has decided to take up pwning noobs - but it is possible that plotters worried about phone or email taps may have turned to alternative modes of communication.

Lohan done at morgue, 'extremely' excited

Toby Canham / Getty Images file

Lindsay Lohan leaves court after a probation hearing in Los Angeles on Feb. 22.

By Rebecca Macatee and Baker Machado, E! Online

Lindsay Lohan?is so close to being a free woman! Barring any last minute setbacks, the "Mean Girls" starlet is less than 24 hours away from being released from any formal probation for the first time in over four years.

"When she arrives in court tomorrow, she will have completed all of her obligations," the actress' rep, Steve Honig, tells E! News.

So what does this mean?

MORE: Lindsay Lohan Calls Car Bump Story "Complete Lie"

Lohan has completed her 14 days of morgue duty and her five therapy sessions which permanently stays her jail sentence of 150 days. If all goes according to plan, Judge Stephanie Sautner will end her 2007 DUI case and switch her to informal probation for her 2011 shoplifting?conviction.

"Our lawyers still need to review the probation report to determine whether or not to recommend that her probation be modified to informal probation," L.A. City Attorney's office spokesman Frank Mateljan tells us.

READ: Lindsay Lohan's a Redhead Again

Lohan will be on informal probation until May 2014, and to get off she must obey all laws and not get in any trouble for the next 2 1/2 years. The plus side of this? Unlike formal probation, informal probation won't require Lohan to report to a probation officer or a judge.

"After March 29, all you have to do is obey all laws, stay out of trouble and move on with your life," Judge Stephanie Sautner said during last month's hearing. "Good luck."

"Lindsay is not celebrating," her rep says. "But rather ending one chapter and starting the next. She is very eager to get back on set and dive into her next few projects."

Honig says the actress "has been a champ and she is very eager to put all of this behind her."

After Thursday's final hearing -- which we'll be livestreaming on E! Online -- Lohan will prepare for her role in an upcoming episode of "Glee" before jetting off to Vancouver in May to start filming the Lifetime TV movie "Liz and Dick," in which she will play Elizabeth Taylor.

Honig says the actress is "extremely" excited to put all the legal drama behind her.

Video: Healthy, satisfying foods to eat before bedtime

>>> this morning on joy's diet s.o.s., daily diet dilemmas. joy bauer is here to discuss everything from the healthiest snack bars to the best foods to eat at night. good morning to you.

>> hey, savannah.

>> beverly in san jose , california, is up early this morning and joins us via skype. beverly , good morning. what's your question?

>> good morning. hi, joy. as a nutritionist, i generally eat well, but what are some healthy but still yummy snack bar options? most seem so laden with sugar and other additives.

>> it's a great question because there are a gazillion snack bars on the market. and some do have more calories and fat than candy bars . instead of having you examine every ingredient, the easiest way to know that a snack bar has the right mix, make sure it has no more than 200 calories, no more than 2 grams of saturated fat and no more than 14 grams of sugar. three of my favorite picks, i like the kind bars, the fruit and nut bars. they have clean ingredients. they travel well. i also like the two-pack hard granola bard from cliff klums and also nature valley . and there's a variety of flavors, and they're delicious. i think. so check them out.

>> all right. beverly , thank you so much.

>> thank you.

>> a lot of those snack bars are kind of like candy bars . you've got to be careful. our next question is on the phone, adrienne in grain valley , missouri. adrienne , good morning. what's your question?

>> good morning. i was calling because i'm just a bit confused looking at nutrition facts for foods, such as brown rice and whole wheat pasta. does it reflect uncooked or cooked?

>> it is confusing. when it comes to pasta, almost always the serving size is going to be based on a two-ounce dry portion. so you just need to know that that equates to one cup cooked and it's about 200 calories. so whether it's white, or whole grain pasta, two ounce dry equals one cup cooked. 200 calories. when it comes to rice it's a little bit more tricky. sometimes it's based on a dry portion, sometimes it's based on a cooked portion. i think the easiest thing to know is just like pasta. one cup cooked rice, whether white, wild or brown is just about 200 calories.

>> adrienne , thank you so much. our next one is say viewer e-mail from katie in andover, mass. and katie writes i sometimes get home late from work and don't get a chance to eat dinner. i am hungry but don't want to have a heavy meal that will sit in my stomach all night right before i go to sleep. order some healthy and satisfying foods i can eat before bed?

>> this is a typical scenario and it's a reality for so many people. you're hungry at night. you deserve to eat dinner no matter what time you get home. i'm going to say go for anything that's under 500 calories. because that's enough to make yourself something substantial and satisfying but it's not too much that you're going to gain weight from it or be left feeling uncomfortable and disrupt your sleep. there's so many options. you could have a bowl of whole grain cereal with skim milk. you could make an egg white omelette, turkey burger. you could even heat up a can of lentil soup or black bean soup or toss in the microwave one of the frozen entrees. you could have a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich.

>> you're making me hungry. keep it under 500 calories and you're cool?

>> that's right.

>> last one, we've got another katie from syracuse, new york, i am breast-feeding and it seems like whenever i eat healthy foods my baby gets extremely fussy. what can i eat that will help my baby feel less gassy.

>> first know that babies are fussy and they're gassy and particularly up until six months because their digestive systems aren't mature. there's no one set of rules of what makes a baby feel more comfortable. but these are some things you might want to try to avoid that have been reported by other nursing women. avoid raw foods such as -- raw vegetables, specifically broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, garlic and onion. believe it or not artichokes and salad seem to be problematic.

>> raw.

>> raw. she can have small portions cooked. she wants to limit lentils, soy foods, and high fiber cereals and bars. and lay off the dairy for a couple of days and see if the baby improves. because some babies are sensitive to lactose.

>> but as the baby gets older?

>> all these healthy foods back in their diet.

Sarkozy: Jail those who browse terror websites

France's president proposed a sweeping new law Thursday that would jail those who visit extremist web sites ? one of several tough new measures floated in the wake of a murderous shooting spree.

The proposed rules, unveiled by Nicolas Sarkozy after the death of an Islamist fanatic wanted for a horrifying series of execution-style murders, have alarmed journalists and legal experts, who say they risk pulling the plug on free expression.

Sarkozy argued that it was time to treat those who browse extremist websites the same way as those who consume child pornography.

"Anyone who regularly consults Internet sites which promote terror or hatred or violence will be sentenced to prison," he told a campaign rally in Strasbourg, in eastern France. "What is possible for pedophiles should be possible for trainee terrorists and their supporters, too."

How the proposed rules would work isn't clear. When asked, Sarkozy's office directed the query for details to the Ministry of Justice, which didn't immediately offer clarification.

Journalists and lawyers are concerned.

"Trying to criminalize a visit ? a simple visit ? to a website, that's something that seems disproportionate," said Lucie Morillon, who runs the new media bureau of journalists' watchdog group Reporters Without Borders.

"What's especially worrying for us is how you are going to know who's looking at what site. Does this announcement mean the installation of a global Internet surveillance system in France?"

Media lawyer Christophe Bigot seconded her concerns, saying that any such law ? if passed ? would be a serious blow to the democratic credentials of a country that considers itself the home of human rights.

"I don't see how you can assume that a person who connects (to an extremist website) not only shares the ideas that are being expressed there but is ready to act on them," Bigot said. "That seems to be a very dangerous shortcut ? a real step back in terms of individual liberty."

Bigot said it wasn't clear to him to what degree Sarkozy's proposals were serious. The president is only a month from a close election and has France's far-right nipping at his heels, so he's been under pressure to appear tough.

The tightening presidential race has been upended by the shooting rampage blamed on Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who allegedly killed three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi before dying in a violent confrontation with police in the southern French city of Toulouse earlier Thursday.

Merah reportedly told police that the campaign of terror was an attempt to "bring France to its knees," and a poll released Thursday by the CSA firm suggested that Sarkozy may benefit politically from a hardening of attitudes toward extremism.

Morillon said she understood the emotional appeal of a crackdown on online radicalization in the wake of such atrocities.

Still, she said, "You have to be careful not to attack the wrong target."

"Once more it's the Internet that's being blamed, as if the Internet was the source of all evil."

Cops bust multi-million-dollar Russian cyber gang

Russian police have nabbed eight men suspected of running the multimillion dollar Carberp phishing gang, which deployed its namesake Trojan to trick victims into handing over millions of dollars over the past two years.

Operating out a "comfortable working environment" in Russia, the suspected cybercriminals siphoned money from victims' bank accounts by infecting social networking sites, online stores and news sites with the Carberp Trojan and creating fake online payment pages, the security firm Group-IB wrote in its statement today.

Criminal cases of larceny, creation and distribution of malicious software and unauthorized access to computer information have been opened for the eight suspected crooks. Group-IB said that in the last fiscal quarter alone, the Carberp phishing gang netted about $4.4 million from clients of more than 100 banking institutions worldwide.

The Carberp Trojan came into play in 2010 and was often found lurking on Facebook; users who had the misfortune of encountering the Trojan were redirected to a compromised Web page that exactly mimicked a legitimate Facebook page, except that it informed them their account was "locked."

The Trojanized page promised to unlock victims' accounts in exchange for their name, email address, birth date, Facebook password and ? as a way to ensure they made some money off the scam ? a $25 fee.

The investigation, a joint effort between the Federal Security Service, the Ministry of the Interior of Russia and Group-IB, is the culmination of more than two years of work. Group-IB said the enforcement team, "for the first time in international practice" was able to establish the entire chain of command, from the head of the group and the botnet owner down to those conducting the fraudulent banking transactions and cashing the stolen funds.

What Are The Facts About Multiple Sclerosis ... - Health and Fitness

There?s still a lot that both medical science and the public don?t yet understand about multiple sclerosis and multiple sclerosis treatment. For example, the largest part of physicians and researchers consider MS to be autoimmune in origin yet opinion is still divided on what triggers it. Preferred treatment methods differ from doctor to doctor and patient to patient as well, that will make the science of treating MS an intricate endeavor. The first thing that is vital to comprehend about multiple sclerosis is that the situation is not fatal. After patients go through their first symptoms, their condition will probably continue to degrade without sufficient treatment. From time to time, people will commonly relapse in spite of treatment, while some may go into remission. Sad to say, there?s also currently no cure for MS. Which means all available types of multiple sclerosis treatment attempt to control conditions, avoid relapses, and slow or stop the progression of the disease.

The exact mechanism by which this advances is largely believed to be autoimmune. This means that the immune system suddenly decides to attack the body, instead of only attacking bacteria, viruses, and other excess foreign bodies. There are many types of autoimmune condition, which differ depending on what area of the body is influenced. In MS, the nervous system experiences the brunt of the immune system?s invasion. Nerve axons are sheathed in a substance called myelin, which helps safeguard them and sustain nervous function. Throughout an attack of these conditions, the immune system attacks and scars these myelin sheaths. This interrupts nerve function, leading to conditions that change determined by which distinct nerves are affected. Over time, the myelin sheaths will break down entirely.

One of the primary challenges posed by treatment is because of the problems inherent in diagnosing the illness. Because it is a degenerative disease, getting recognized quickly and beginning to get treatment as soon as possible are important. Sad to say, it isn?t always possible to immediately diagnose MS. In most cases, MS symptoms appear in sudden attacks. For a few people, however, they can appear gradually, as a consequence of nerve damage that accumulates over time.

To diagnose the ailment, doctors rely on a list of diagnostic criteria that patients must fit before they can receive a positive diagnosis and begin medication, and a neurological exam that can incorporate an MRI, spinal tap, or other diagnostic procedures.. There are no simple blood tests or other diagnostic measures that can determine if someone has MS. Only a patient interview and neurological exam can do so.

While checking items off of an ?MS Checklist? might sound easy, in reality it is anything but. Symptoms vary based on which nerves are damaged, so virtually no two cases of MS are alike. As a result, no two means of diagnosing MS are alike, and no two courses of MS treatment are alike. Everyone?s disease will respond differently to treatment, based on their own physical health, how far they were progressed when they began multiple sclerosis treatment, and many additional circumstances.

Touring Children's Museum with PlaySpace Creator ?

Jeri Robinson (Photo: Lok Wah Li, Boston Children's Museum)

The Boston Children?s Museum on Fort Point Channel is teeming with children and parents during school vacation week. So it?s a good time for Jeri Robinson, vice president for education and family learning, to lead me on a guided tour of some of the museum?s early learning spaces. On the way, we pass children scrambling up and down the multi-story climbing maze. We pass children and parents sitting on colorful ?musical? chairs that each emit a different sound and together can create a symphony.? We pass children checking out the blocks and Bobcat in the Construction Zone, all in what is essentially a giant indoor playground for children of all ages. Prompts on the walls and parent tip sheets provide ideas for adults to engage children.

?Our critical message is there?s a lot of learning in play,? Robinson says. ?In everything we do, we have a hidden or overt learning activity. Play has gotten a bad rap that it?s a waste of time. It?s not.?

In fact, research tells us that play is how young children learn. Science tells us that the kind of language-rich, playful adult-child interactions that the museum encourages enhance the actual wiring of the young brain.

In 1978, when the museum was housed in a Jamaica Plain mansion, Robinson established the nation?s first play space for infants and toddlers in a children?s museum. In 1998, she co-founded Countdown to Kindergarten, a partnership with the Boston Public Schools. Originally conceived to help parents navigate the logistics of entering the public school system, today it focuses on the early learning that will help children enter kindergarten ready to succeed.

Now Robinson is coordinating a project with the commonwealth?s children?s museums and libraries ? ?two very strong places of informal education,? Robinson says ? as part of the four-year, $50 million Race to the Top ? Early Learning Challenge grant that the Obama administration awarded Massachusetts in December. ?We want to take what we?ve done with the Boston Public Schools in terms of Countdown to Kindergarten and have that kind of work go on across the state,? Robinson says. ?How do we honor what?s already going on? What can we add that complements it and goes to the next level??

Robinson, who has lived in Boston?s Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods her entire life, began her career as a kindergarten teacher at the Highland Park Free School in Roxbury. She was fulfilling a dream she?d had since she was a kindergartner herself at the Nathan Hale School in Roxbury and decided that she wanted to teach kindergarten when she grew up. (Note to readers: Robinson reveals her favorite children?s book at the end of this blog post.)

The museum, which was founded in 1913, is also planning a centennial celebration from April to October 2013 that, Robinson says, will include an early childhood symposium (a follow-up to last fall?s Early Childhood Summit), a parent fair, a major gala, and smaller activities in the museum and neighborhoods.

Back in the 1970s, the Jamaica Plain museum was designed to serve school-aged children. No strollers were allowed, so the museum offered parents backpacks to use to carry the young siblings of the museumgoers. Parents couldn?t even see their babies? faces, much less interact with them.

?Babies and toddlers were a package, not a visitor,? Robinson recalls. ?The issue for me was our target audience was school-age and parents were coming with babies and toddlers. The babies start to cry, and the family leaves.? The play space was born as a play pen for these younger siblings.

The current PlaySpace, the first stop on my tour with Robinson, is an expansive, gated area designed for infants and toddlers, up to age 3, last updated in 2000. Outside the space, there is a parking area for strollers. Inside it, a child- and parent-friendly haven beckons with colorful stations for gross and fine motor activities, dramatic play, scientific exploration and socializing.

The average PlaySpace visit is 2? hours, a length of time that, Robinson explains, wouldn?t be possible without extensive seating for adults, whether on stools in play areas or banquettes along the perimeter.

There are enclosed areas for the youngest visitors. The water bed for babies is ?a sensory activity,? Robinson says. ?You get a lot of impact for small motions. It encourages babies to move.? An open-ended soft house is a crawl-through bridge ? ?a hideout that?s not too scary.? There are soft undulating hillocks. A fish tank has goldfish and zebra fish. ?There are lots of textures and destinations,? Robinson says.

A large model train set-up, with wood Brio cars, occupies part of the main area of PlaySpace. Children have brought dinosaurs and dolls from other stations. Children stand playing around the edges of the track, and they pop up through prairie dog holes that both extend their reach and have them face the parents or caregivers seated along the perimeter instead of playing only with their backs to the adults.

?A lot of it is dramatic play. And there?s a lot of sharing going on. Somebody takes my train. How do I get it back?? Robinson says. ?The trains are magnetic. It?s magic to them. You?ll see kids try putting the different ends of the cars together. There?s a lot of spatial learning. What fits through where? How do I have to maneuver to keep my 12-car train in one piece??

The tree house is ?gross motor heaven? with a carpeted swaying bridge ?so you can practice your walking skills? and stairs that are particularly interesting ?for kids who don?t have a house with steps.? Dramatic play areas include a child-size kitchen and gas station. A messy sensory area, with child and adult-size aprons, might have water one day and Play Doh the next.

Our next stop is the science-themed Peep?s World of water, sand and light for young children who have outgrown PlaySpace. One end of the water area holds a giant sink. Pull the rubber plug and cups and spatulas swirl down the drain ? and are stopped by a plastic barrier. ?See how the water swirls,? Robinson tells two young girls. There are all sorts of funnels and cups, a water wheel made of spoons, and a large tipping bucket. ?There are all kinds of little surprises,? Robinson says.

One sign asks: What can we do with water? Drip * Pour * Splash * Squirt * Float * Sink * Measure. Another sign ? Where?d the water go? ? is one of many prompts for adults embedded in the walls.

?We?re building descriptive science vocabulary,? Robinson says. ?Can you make the water do all these things? A parent might ask what can you measure with water??

The sand area has dry sand, complete with more funnels and measuring cups, and wet sand. ?Just the sensory texture of dry sand. It?s a calming, soothing activity,? Robinson says. ?The properties of the wet sand are different. You can draw in it. You can mold it.?

In the final area of Peep?s Word, children experience the different properties of light and shadows. ?A lot of kids at this age are afraid of shadows,? Robinson says. ?It?s about how the light hits an object. The children can control the light. It?s a way to understand the shadows you see in your room at night.?

On our way out of the museum, we pass the Countdown to Kindergarten model kindergarten classroom that I visited shortly after it opened in 2010.

?People come to us volitionally. We have as many adult visitors as children,? Robinson says. ?What are the messages we can share with families. What are the bigger issues? How do you turn this into things that are meaningful? This is not just a place for children, but a place for family learning as well.?

First Pages

Given how important her own kindergarten experience was, it is perhaps not surprising that Robinson?s favorite children?s book is one she first heard read aloud in kindergarten. The book is ?It Looked Like Spilt Milk? by Charles G. Shaw, and it?s about clouds.

?I remember the teacher reading it in kindergarten,? Robinson recalls. ?It was the first book I learned to read. I used it in my kindergarten class.?

Here is the first page:

Should You have Affair Relationships To Save An Unhappy One ...

It is not all that uncommon these days to have affair relationships. There are lots of men who?ve ?another woman? on the side and in fact you will find also quite a lot of women who?ve ?another man?. It may appear thrilling to become involved in an affair relationship but is it truly worth losing your marriage or your present long-term relationship over?

Individuals frequently have affair relationships simply because they are not pleased in their present relationship. If this is the case, then why not end the present relationship or take actions to improve it. If you are having an affair or contemplating getting 1 then put your self inside your partner?s shoes and consider how you?d really feel if they had an affair. Would you believe it was ok for your wife or husband to cheat on you?

If you are relationship is not all that thrilling or has been getting difficulty then speak to your partner and let them know how you?re feeling. If you?re relationship is something you cherish and wish to continue then it?s worth trying to function out any issues which you have. Your partner can?t assist function out any issues if they do not know you are unhappy. If you enjoy your partner then you owe them the chance to try and make your relationship work instead of looking for happiness with someone else on the side.

If you?re just not pleased together with your current partner and understand that the relationship will never be any better then you should consider ending the relationship instead of getting affair relationships to help keep you pleased. Ending a relationship is a big step and 1 which you are attempting to avoid but if it is inevitable then you should do it.

Sometimes it could appear simpler to stay in an unhappy relationship because you may rely on your partner for support. If your partner will be the primary revenue earner then it could be a struggle financially in the event you ended the relationship. If this really is the case then it might seem easier to continue getting affairs rather than finish this relationship and be on your personal. If you are unhappy then there is no point attempting to reconcile and make a relationship work, and financial reasons are not enough to stay in an unhappy relationship.
