The Internet itself is widely considered to be the biggest computer network in the world, the speed of which is only limited by the technology which interconnects it together and also the computers serving websites.
There are various aspects that can cause a bottleneck to occur in your Internet speed, these are as follows:
- The speed of your internet connection link (i.e. dial-up, broadband, etc)
- The processor and memory capabilities of your computer system
- The settings contained within your web browser (temporary files, etc)
- The presence of malware, spyware and viruses on your computer.
Also, the speed of accessing the Internet from your computer can also depend on what type of usage is taking place. For example, simply browsing the web and sending / receiving email messages, would use minimal bandwidth and processor time, meaning that you could do these activities quite quickly.
However, there are some occasions where your Internet connection can be faster than your computer, meaning that although the data you are accessing is downloaded quickly enough from the website are on, it seems slower because your computer system takes a few seconds to process the relevant data and display it on your screen.
This type of problem is usually very easily to resolve though, and can be done by completing the following steps:
- Set the cache size to around 500MB or so (this should be enough for most systems)
- Disable any built-in pop-up features within your browser, i.e. url suggestion tools etc (note that this doesn?t mean or include pop-ups that websites themselves generate)
Also, if you are willing to sacrifice the ability to store internet history on your computer, enabling the private browsing feature of your browser can be an excellent way to speed up web page access.
This is because when a web browser is set to private browsing mode, it stores any cached data within the computer?s RAM memory, rather than the hard drive. As RAM memory is much quicker than a hard drive, your computer can process information a lot faster and therefore provide a positive browsing experience.
However, when you start using more bandwidth and processor intensive Internet applications, such as online gaming and VOIP calls, this is where things start to slow down somewhat.
Finally, in this case, you will need to purchase either a faster computer system, or a faster internet connection, as without doing so, one of these aspects will always slow your computer down whenever you are trying to access these types of Internet applications.
