North Korea launches rocket in defiance of critics

SEOUL (Reuters) - Isolated and impoverished North Korea launched its second long- range rocket of 2012 on Wednesday in what it said was a bid to put a satellite into space.

The North launched the rocket close to the first anniversary of the death of former leader Kim Jong-il and as elections loom in South Korea and Japan.

The launch, reported by South Korean media, was confirmed by South Korea's Defense Ministry.

Pyongyang says it is entitled to launch a satellite into space but critics say the rocket development is aimed at nurturing the kind of technology needed to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile.

North Korea is banned from conducting missile and nuclear-related tests under U.N. sanctions imposed after its 2006 and 2009 nuclear tests.

The latest launch comes after a failed attempt in April that fizzled less than two minutes after blast-off.

Japan and South Korea put their armed forces on alert prior to the launch. The rocket is scheduled to pass between the Korean peninsula and China, with a second stage splashing down off the Philippines before launching the satellite into orbit.

Most political analysts believe the launch is designed to bolster the credentials of new leader Kim Jong-un as he cements his rule over the country of 22 million people.

A government official in Seoul said recently that the transition of power to Kim Jong-un did not appear to be going as smoothly as anticipated and there were signs that the regime was concerned over the possibility of rising dissent.

Kim is the third of his line to rule North Korea, whose national output is around one-fortieth of that of prosperous South Korea.

Plans for the launch has drawn criticism from South Korea, Russia, Japan and the United States as well as NATO and the United Nations.

The North's only major diplomatic ally, China, has expressed "deep concern" over the launch but is thought unlikely to back any further sanctions against its ally.

You think of The Bow [the new headquarters for EnCana Corp.], with the trailing vacancy it left behind, and nobody would have seen this coming. If they wanted an option with the size of that tenancy, they would have to wait four years [for a new building to be constructed.] Is it an issue of wanting to go to the suburbs or are there no options?

Q How much has Vancouver?s market benefitted from the resource boom and how will the market there be affected by any slowdown in China?

A Vancouver is tight. There are three towers coming out and five planned. They are generally the type of floor plates you see on the West Coast, smaller tenants that are extensions of satellite offices from Asia-Pacific or the U.S. Vancouver is resource-based but less on oil and gas and more on wood and water. They are attracting some tech now which are growing into something bigger. Commercially they are not as tied [to China] as you think. That?s more residential. We are seeing wholesale development of investment from Asian investors planning for a major [commercial] development. We haven?t see that before.

Q Does anybody really care in the Montreal real estate world about the change in government to the Parti Qu?b?cois?

A I don?t think it?s met with as much fanfare as anticipated. We have three new towers in Montreal, all of which are scheduled to go. Nobody has stopped any investment that I?m aware of. When was last time three towers went up in Montreal without provincial government interference? It?s probably been 30 or 40 years.

Q Toronto already has 4.4 millions square feet of development happening right now, How much more new space can the city absorb?

A All of it is substantially leased. Based on rules on financing it wouldn?t be happening otherwise. It?s not so much about [companies] wanting to be back downtown as much as that?s where their labour wants to be. The decision to locate is predominantly about the people, especially if you are white-collar, knowledge-based and young. We are not building buildings for 20-year-olds. There is a whole group of that knowledge base that wants to be in an urban section.

Q Are condos actually impinging on commercial development, as space tightens in urban cores? Which asset class wins out?

A You can make more money with mixed-use development, more than two [of retail, office and residential]. In the case of Maple Leaf Square [in Toronto], there is even a hotel. Mixed is a self-contained community. In major global markets like in Asia you have second and third floor retails, though that may not fly here. It?s just a better use of density. Look at the buyers, in every sector but industrial [real estate] 60% has gone to the [publicly] traded sector. Where is all this foreign investment? The pension funds, they?ve become the developers. [Return] on existing [property] is 5% and new build is 8% to 9%. The risk return favours new builds for pensions. The REITs have to be accretive, so they are buying.

Back in September, two employees of Baptist Memorial agreed to take part in the Well4Me six-month personal challenge program to lose weight and improve their health.

Melanie Polzin and Uriel Dukes are meeting regularly with a fitness expert, dietician and cardiologist.

They are also making better food choices and have gone from no exercise to working out at least three days a week.

?I was tired of being tired. I?m a cardiovascular ICU nurse manager and I?m not in the optimum health. How is somebody going to take me seriously, you know,? said Polzin.

Polzin, who is a cardiovascular ICU Nurse, has already lost 14 pounds, and Dukes, a respiratory therapist, has lost 10 pounds.

New way to prevent recurrent ear infections?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eliminating bacteria's DNA and boosting antimicrobial proteins that already exist may help prevent middle ear infections from reoccurring. These are the findings from a Nationwide Children's Hospital study that examined how an immune defense protein common in the middle ear interacts with a structure meant to protect a colony of bacteria.

The bacterium nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) causes a wide range of diseases of both the lower and upper airways, including middle ear infection. NTHI, like most other bacteria, can form a biofilm, a robust community of bacteria that allows the bacteria to evade the host's immune system and protects the bacteria from antibiotics and other therapies designed to kill them.

Human beta-defensin-3 is an antimicrobial defense protein expressed in the middle ear of humans and other mammals that kills both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Previous research has shown that if expression of beta-defensin is disrupted, the host's ability to control the bacteria in the upper airway is altered and infection worsens.

Investigators in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital hypothesized that human beta-defensin-3 might lose its power to kill NTHI if it got caught up within the extracellular DNA that makes up a biofilm's outer layer, thus preventing its contact with bacteria within the biofilm.

"Antimicrobial host defense proteins, like human beta-defensin-3, have been shown to bind to non-host DNA," says Lauren O. Bakaletz, PhD director of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis "This interaction has an impact on the defense protein's ability to function."

Upon examining their animal model of middle ear infection, Dr. Bakaletz' team found that bacterial DNA and the animal's defense peptides were detected together in biofilms that developed during infection. Also, the defense peptide was predominantly co-localized with the biofilm's extracellular DNA.

When the team exposed the bacteria that cause ear infections to a concentration of human-beta defensin-3 that is typically detected in the a middle ear of a child with active infection, the peptide was able to kill 100 percent of the NTHI, but the killing stopped when extracellular DNA was introduced to the reaction.

"These data support the conclusion that the killing activity of the antimicrobial defense protein was decreased in an NTHI-induced biofilm due to its interaction with eDNA," says Dr. Bakaletz, who is the lead study author and professor of Pediatrics and Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

When they removed extracellular DNA from the biofilm, the killing activity of the defense peptide was rescued.

"The ability to restore antimicrobial defense protein activity is encouraging, since biofilms are resistant to most treatments, including traditional antibiotics," says Dr. Bakaletz.

Dr. Bakaletz says this study provides evidence for a new treatment regimen to target biofilms formed by NTHI during middle ear infection. One approach would be to deliver a therapeutic agent that can disrupt bacterial DNA, in conjunction with human beta-defensin-3 to the middle ear of a child with chronic, recurrent infection. Physicians could follow the same pathway used to target the middle ear during ear tube surgery, a common treatment for chronic ear infections.

"This approach would likely bolster the ability of the innate immune system to manage NTHI-induced biofilms, avoiding the need for antibiotics or empowering the use of antibiotics we already have in our arsenal," says Dr. Bakaletz. "Doing so could help diminish the recurrent nature of middle ear infection."
