From US News & World Report?..
A large federal trial, looking at lifestyle?diet and exercise?for the treatment of diabetes was just terminated because, after 11 years, it wasn?t working as intended. The Look AHEAD study was stopped early because it was not reducing the rate of heart attack and stroke in the intervention group relative to the control. The termination was reported in a press release by the National Institutes of Health, and picked up by mainstream media. The findings suggest that diet and exercise are not effective for reducing the cardiovascular complications of diabetes.
And so, AHEAD, or at least the media coverage of it, is inviting us to look back, and doubt what we thought we knew about diet as the best medicine we?ve got?for diabetes, at least. We thought we knew that lifestyle was among the most powerful determinants of health outcomes. We thought we knew that diet and exercise together could prevent heart attacks in high-risk people. Participants in the AHEAD intervention lost 8 percent of their body weight by the end of the first year of the trial and were still down 5 percent from their baseline weight at the four-year mark. We thought we knew that diet, exercise, and weight management like this exerted important influences on the course of diabetes. Now, the AHEAD findings suggest we were wrong. Right? Not so fast.
For one thing, the trial did generate many noteworthy benefits. Prior papers in the Archives of Internal Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine have reported significant benefits of lifestyle intervention related to weight loss, fitness, blood glucose levels, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and mobility. The study was terminated for failing to prevent heart attacks and strokes, but it did reduce medication use, and conferred other benefits?such as a significant reduction in sleep apnea.

Facebook shares are on track for their largest percentage gain ever, with Colin Sebastian, Robert W. Baird & Co.
By Cadie Thompson, CNBC.com
Wall Street seems to like?Facebook?again for the same reason it used to hate it. That reason can be summed up in one word: mobile.
The social network's stock had its biggest single-day surge since the company went public in May.?Facebook's?shares were up 19 percent to close at $23.23 Wednesday, and the company was a top gainer on the?Nasdaq.
Multiple brokerage firms raised their price target for the social media company Tuesday after it reported a 32 percent increase in revenue and a surprising increase in mobile advertising in?its third quarter earnings.
"We definitely knew that the mobile side of the business was strong, but the magnitude of the growth and revenue was shocking I think to everybody," Jordan Rohan, managing director at Stifel Nicolaus, said Wednesday?CNBC's Halftime Report.
"The fact that in May they had essentially zero mobile revenues and for the September quarter $150 million in revenues, that is something that I think caught everybody by surprise."
Facebook's revenue jumped to $1.26 billion from $954 million a year ago in the third quarter, a 32 percent increase. Advertising revenue increased by 36 percent to $1.09 billion, a 36 percent increase from a year ago. (Read More:?Facebook May Get $1 Billion From Mobile.)
Barclays Capital,?Jefferies,?Macquarie Equities Research?raised their price targets on the company, while?Citigroup,?BofA Merrill?and?Stifel?raised their rating to a buy.
Mobile advertising concerns have weighed heavily on Facebook shares since the company's initial public offering in May when the stock sold for $38 per share. But the recent earnings report may be a sign that Facebook's mobile problem is a thing of the past, Rohan said.
"What's exciting about Facebook right now is we actually have now turned the corner. Six months ago mobile was the enemy at some level. Mobile was the force that would reduce monetization for the overall Facebook platform," Rohan said. "Now mobile...is actually a friend to Facebook."

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? When astronauts return to Earth, their altitude isn't the only thing that drops -- their blood pressure does too. This condition, known as orthostatic hypotension, occurs in up to half of those astronauts on short-term missions (two weeks or less) and in nearly all astronauts after long-term missions (four to six months). A new research report published online in The FASEB Journal solves the biological mystery of how this happens by showing that low gravity compromises the ability of arteries and veins to constrict normally, inhibiting the proper flow of blood.
Prevention and treatment strategies developed for astronauts may also hold promise for elderly populations on Earth who experience orthostatic hypotension more than any other age group.
"The idea of space exploration has been tantalizing the imagination of humans since our early existence. As a scientist, I have had the opportunity to learn that there are many medical challenges associated with travel in a weightless environment, such as orthostatic hypotension, bone loss and the recently recognized visual impairment that occurs in astronauts," said Michael D. Delp, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, and the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. "Although I have come to realize that it is unlikely I will ever get to fulfill my childhood dream of flying in space, I take great satisfaction with helping in the discovery of how microgravity alters the human body and how we can minimize these effects, so humans can safely explore the bounds of our universe."
To make this discovery, Delp and colleagues examined arteries and veins from mice housed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with blood vessels from groups of mice flown on three of the last five space shuttle missions -- STS-131, STS-133 and STS-135. Mice flown on the STS-131 and STS-135 missions were tested immediately after returning to Earth, whereas mice from STS-133 were tested one, five and seven days after landing. Not only did they find that these mice experienced the equivalent of orthostatic hypotension in humans, they also discovered that it takes as many as four days in normal gravity before the condition is reversed.
"There has been considerable interest in sending humans to the moon, asteroids, and Mars," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but what we're finding is that extended space missions have their own inherent risks above and beyond the obvious. If we ever hope to visit distant worlds for extended periods of time -- or colonize them permanently -- we've got to figure out how to mitigate the effects that low and no gravity has on the body. This report brings us an important step closer to doing just that."

This post reviews Kathleen Ambruso Acker, Mary W. Gray, Behzad Jalali, and Matthew Pascal, ?Mathematics and Home Schooling? in Notices of the AMS 59, no, 4 (April 2012): 513-521.
All four authors of this paper are affiliated with American University.? The stated aim of this misleadingly titled paper is to analyze the legal framework for homeschooling, noting especially the place of mathematics in it, and then to examine how well homeschooling prepares students for college and employment.
The first part of the article, on legal matters, is an odd pastiche of themes lifted from my book and from work by Jim Dwyer and Kimberly Yuracko.? It is entirely derivative and tends to leap from topic to topic without much of an overarching theme or organizational scheme.
After several pages of meandering commentary on various court cases, historical matters, and state regulations, the authors finally get to the issue of mathematics.? Here the extent of their analysis is to summarize what the various state homeschooling laws and regulations have to say about math.? Here?s the summary:
currently twenty-eight states and the District of Columbia use ?mathematics? for a topic to be learned by those who are home schooled, although content is not specified.? North Dakota and Pennsylvania are two states that detail the number of mathematics credits and mention algebra as required study.? Seven states note that subjects covered should be comparable to those in the curriculum of the public school system.? Three other states only require that students learn arithmetic, and no mention is made of higher mathematics.? In Vermont the statutory language for required topics notes that students should study the use of numbers.? Although the state of Oklahoma strongly recommends the study of mathematics, it does not require it by law.? Only three states impose on home-schooled students, by law, high school graduation requirements that include mathematics. (p. 517-518)
After noting how sharply this lax attitude toward homeschooling contrasts with the intense emphasis in public education on mathematics accountability through high-stakes testing, the authors introduce their final theme.? It is the potential discrimination against girls that might be occurring in homeschooling families who believe that their daughters, whom God created solely to be mothers, should not take math or go to college.? The only evidence they cite that this may be happening is lifted entirely from Yuracko?s article I reviewed here, and it consists of quotes from two advice books written by fundamentalist Christians to homeschooling girls.
After finding that states don?t really require much math of homeschoolers and don?t really enforce even what they do require, and after worrying that there may be a generation of young homeschooling girls not being given the basic mathematics education necessary for many good jobs today, the authors conclude by recommending regulations lifted entirely from Judith McMullen?s 2002 piece ?Behind Closed Doors,? which appeared in the South Carolina Law Review (but is not in their reference list).? McMullen wants all homeschoolers to be required to register, to take vaccinations, to be given ?age-appropriate competence testing in reading and mathematics,? and to receive some kind of independent monitoring.
Aside from the one paragraph that summarizes state laws about homeschooler math requirements, there?s nothing new or interesting in this piece.? I have no idea why it was published.? We need good studies of homeschooling and mathematics.? When I saw the title of this piece I was looking forward to reading what these four authors had discovered.? But all I got was a weak summary of older work.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? We humans have a fairly erratic sense of time. We tend to misjudge the duration of events, particularly when they are emotional in nature. Disturbingly negative experiences, for example, seem to last much longer than they actually do. And highly positive experiences seem to pass more quickly than negative ones.
Researchers say they have found a way to lessen these emotion-driven time distortions. Having a sense of control over events reduces the influence of emotions on time perception, the researchers report. This is true even for highly reactive emotional individuals and even if one's sense of control is an illusion.
The researchers describe their findings in a paper in Frontiers in Psychology.
Previous studies have found that highly arousing emotional experiences lead to the time distortions described above. Most people report that highly arousing positive images (erotic pictures, for example), viewed briefly on a computer monitor, flash by more quickly than disturbingly negative ones (of a dismembered body, for instance), even when the images are viewed for the same length of time. In contrast, low arousing positive or negative images (of a flower or mop, for example) tend to have the opposite effect: Most people report that mildly positive images seem to last longer than mildly negative ones do.
"We imagine that we're perfect at judging time, but we're not," said University of Illinois postdoctoral researcher Simona Buetti, who conducted the study with psychology professor Alejandro Lleras. "If you see a disgusting image, like a photo of a mutilated body, you will perceive this image lasting longer than if you see a picture of people on a roller coaster, or an erotic image. The major contribution of this study is to show that when you give participants a feeling of control, even if it's not perfect and even if it's totally illusory in an experiment, then you can make all these time distortions vanish."
Previous studies also exposed participants to positive and negative images to determine their effect on cognition, Lleras said.
"But in these previous studies, participants never had a sense of control over the experimental events. Images were just presented and participants simply reacted to them as they appeared," he said. "What is novel in our study is that participants are for the first time being given a sense that they can control the emotional events that they are witnessing in the lab."
In a series of experiments, the researchers asked participants to press keys on a keyboard to try to increase the frequency with which positive (or, in one experiment, negative) images appeared on a computer monitor. In reality, the participants had no control over the images; the researchers manipulated the ratio of positive to negative images to give them the impression that they were controlling -- or failing to control -- the emotional content of the images.
The researchers also tested a subset of participants who had a strong aversion to spiders. Buetti and Lleras reasoned that if control could alter the way people experienced emotional events, a particularly rigorous and useful test of this hypothesis would be to see if this held true in subjects who had very strong emotional reactions to images of spiders.
As in previous studies, when participants experienced low levels of control over experimental events, they tended to overestimate the amount of time they looked at highly arousing negative images (including photos of spiders) in relation to the amount of time they viewed highly arousing positive images. Buetti and Lleras also discovered that the more a person feared spiders, the more he or she tended to overestimate the duration of spider images.
"For spider-fearful individuals, it's as if time slows down when they are confronted with spiders," Lleras said.
But when the researchers induced a high level of perceived control in participants, the time distortions associated with the emotional content of the images went away.
"Even among spider-fearful participants, images of spiders no longer slowed time," said Lleras, who also is an affiliate of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.
"Across experiments, we found that the same images, the same horrible or positive images are actually treated differently if you give a sense of control to participants," Buetti said. "All of a sudden, they're looking at the world differently; they're reacting to the world differently."
Some time distortions returned, however, when in a final experiment participants were made to feel in control of negative events (the viewing of mostly negative images). When they pursued a goal that violated their basic instincts and desires for well-being, Lleras said, their sense of control "failed to inoculate them from the time distortions associated with viewing very disturbing negative images."
The new findings have implications for future studies, the researchers said.
"We now know that experiments on emotion processing can lead to dramatically different outcomes depending on whether participants are offered a sense of control over experimental events or not," Buetti said.

Websites like these enable people to browse the accessible wagers and review their odds, as well as deposit funds and put bets on their own predicted outcome. When someone places a fantastic bet, the sportsbook deposits the profit into the player?s account. A percentage from the earnings is often subtracted as a commission to the bookmaker.
Betting on the Move
To meet the demands as well as expectations of the online gambling area, many casinos and bookies provide applications for mobile devices to ensure that customers can continue to access their own accounts whenever they?re away from a pc. Mobile casino and gambling apps are downloaded on the user?s cell phone or other backed mobile device. With the app installed, individuals can savor the top features of their most favorite betting website with all the added ease of availability on the go.
Starting Out?
Mobile sports betting is quite similar to placing bets through an online bookmaker. Those who already have a bank account with a reliable sportsbook may usually just set up the application and sign into their account with the same password and username that they use online. Those people who are a new comer to sports betting only have to setup an account to get started. This can be achieved via the mobile phone with lots of applications, but it?s often easier for the gamer to set up their own account from their home computer. In either case, it takes only seconds to join the action.
Creating Deposits
Aside from setting up an account with an online sportsbook or casino, people will also need to fund their own accounts just before putting any wagers. Several mobile applications allow gamers to create deposits using their own mobile phones or maybe pc tablets, but again, it is usually simpler to perform this from a desktop computer. Once the account has the minimum funds needed by the casino, a person can use his or her mobile phone to examine the current chances, put wagers, monitor the results, and also hopefully win big.
The Very Best Mobile Betting Sites
Not all online bookmakers offer applications for mobile betting, however there are tons that do, and a number of casinos offering sports betting and access to a variety of games for an exciting mobile gambling experience. Depending on the nation that the gambling web site is certified through, there might be restrictions on who could set up an account and also the currency used. Make sure to browse the terms and conditions before selecting a mobile bookmaker. Also keep an eye out for bonus deals that sportsbooks might provide to mobile sports players. Developments in technology keep gambling even more thrilling and handy for that gamers who love it. Mobile betting plus casino apps are obvious proof.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Left-hander Barry Zito will start the World Series opener for the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night against Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday he will go with Zito, who has resurrected his career this year. Zito's stellar outing in a 5-0 victory on Friday night in Game 5 of the NL championship series at Busch Stadium helped San Francisco rally from a 3-1 series deficit against the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals to return to the World Series for the second time in three years.
The Giants have won Zito's last 13 starts dating to Aug. 7. The $126 million pitcher was left off all three rounds of the 2010 postseason when San Francisco won the franchise's first championship since moving West in 1958.

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- When Mitt Romney came to Boca Raton -- the site of tonight's debate -- last May, he regaled a private fundraiser with a tale from his time in China, when he and a Bain Capital colleague went to inspect a factory he was considering purchasing. The conditions he found there shocked him, but he turned it into an uplifting story, noting that the factory's barbed wire was -- according to their tour guide, at least -- in place not to keep the young women locked in, but to keep desperate job seekers locked out.
It was that portion of Romney's talk that so profoundly affected one man in the room, moving him to upload the comments on YouTube and ultimately release the video that is now known by just a number: 47 percent.
HuffPost met up with the clandestine filmmaker on Monday, and asked him what thoughts he had going into the foreign policy debate.
"Romney has been talking about getting tough on China lately. From what I heard at the dinner, he's more interested in getting tough on the young Chinese girls at his sweatshop," the man said, continuing to request anonymity. "Unless we stand up for those girls in China, our mothers, sisters and daughters here are doomed to the same fate. Just ask the Sensata workers. If he could get rid of the unions, he would have no problem paying U.S. workers a 'pittance,' stacking them three high, 12 to a room. Romney is dangerously out of touch with the struggles of hard-working Americans."
Sensata is a reference to a Bain Capital-owned factory in Illinois. Bain is closing the plant, laying off the workers, and shipping production to China. The factory is scheduled to close for good in early November, and the American workers were asked to train their Chinese replacements.
Romney himself has profited handsomely from Sensata Technologies through his ongoing investment with Bain. The workers have pleaded with Romney to intervene; he has so far declined to do so.

LONDON (AP) ? A sexual abuse scandal shaking the BBC broadened Tuesday, with the broadcaster's chief saying the corporation was investigating claims of abuse and harassment against as many as 10 former and current staff.
The BBC has been rocked by allegations that longtime children's host Jimmy Savile, who died last year, abused underage teens over several decades, sometimes on BBC premises. Some of the alleged victims have accused other entertainers and BBC staff of participating in abuse during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
Director-general George Entwistle told British lawmakers Tuesday that the BBC is looking into historical allegations of sexual abuse or harassment against "between eight and 10" past and present employees.
Separately, the BBC press office said it was aware of "nine allegations of sexual harassment, assault or inappropriate conduct" involving current staff or contributors to the BBC, which employs some 20,000 people.
Entwistle said it was too early to say whether sexual abuse had been endemic within Britain's publicly funded national broadcaster, but insisted the BBC would assist police if detectives chose to investigate whether there had been a pedophile ring at the corporation.
Entwistle acknowledged there had been "a problem of culture within the BBC ... a broader cultural problem" that allowed Savile's behavior to go unchecked.
"There is no question that what Jimmy Savile did and the way the BBC behaved ... will raise questions of trust for us and reputation for us," Entwistle said. "This is a gravely serious matter, and one cannot look back at it with anything other than horror."
Entwistle's testimony before the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee came a day after the BBC aired a powerful documentary about the corporation's role in the expanding sex abuse scandal involving Savile, who died a year ago at age 84.
Since Savile's death, scores of women and several men have come forward to say the entertainer ? a longtime host of music and children's programs including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" ? abused them when they were children or teenagers. Police have identified more than 200 potential victims.
The BBC, one of the world's largest and most respected broadcasters, is under fire for failing to stop the abuse and for pulling an expose on Savile from TV schedules at the last minute in December. The sex allegations were later aired on the rival ITV network.
The head of the BBC's "Newsnight" program, Peter Rippon, has been suspended pending an investigation of his decision to scrap the Savile story.
Monday's documentary, which was watched by more than 5 million people, presented the unusual spectacle of BBC journalists grilling their own bosses about why the piece had been dropped.
In an attempt to get to the bottom of the story, the parliamentary committee spent two hours Tuesday questioning Entwistle, who has been in the BBC's top job for just a month, after years in senior news and current affairs roles.
It may also want to question his predecessor, Mark Thompson, who led the organization at the time the "Newsnight" report was yanked. Thompson was appointed chief executive of the New York Times Co. in August and is due to take up the post next month.
He told ITV News that if "the police inquiry or the select committee want to hear from me, of course I'll help in any way I can."
Few public figures have had as spectacular a fall from grace as the cigar-chomping, platinum-haired Savile, who was knighted for his charity fundraising and praised on his death as a popular if eccentric entertainer.
Since the ITV report aired earlier this month, his family has removed and destroyed his gravestone, and two charities named after him have announced they will close.
It is not just the BBC that is under fire. Schools and hospitals associated with Savile's charity work stand accused of letting him abuse young people during visits. And state prosecutors have acknowledged they investigated four abuse allegations against him in 2009, but did not press charges.
Child welfare experts say there is a sadly familiar pattern? seen also in the case of child-molesting Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky or pedophile priests in the Roman Catholic church ? of large organizations failing to act on claims of abuse from young people.
One of the revelations of Monday's documentary was that Rippon had sent an email expressing doubts about the Savile documentary because "our sources so far are just the women" ? Savile's accusers.
Entwistle insisted the BBC was not complacent about sexism, and had hired a senior lawyer to look at how it handles sexual harassment cases.
"I do believe the culture has changed since the '70s and '80s," Entwistle said. "But I'm not convinced it has changed as much as it should have."
He said Savile had been "a very skillful and successful sexual predator who covered his tracks."
"These things are institutionally, it seems, very difficult to deal with," he said.

Whatever you do, do not miss out on marketing your business online. It has really become necessary to promote your business online. This is the time to go ahead and do it. The following tips can help you figure out how to market your business.
Before you can aspire to real success with online marketing, you must first have a really good website. Check frequently for broken links, outdated information and any other problems that could detract from the message and product you are presenting. If visitors have a hard time looking through your site, they will probably avoid purchasing anything from you.
A title often commands respect. If you?re a business owner, become CEO. If you are not the owner of a business, make sure you have a great title! Make sure you sign all announcements and emails with name and title included.
TIP! Make sure you know what tools your competitors are using to drive business. Every niche has competition no matter what it is.
Use Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites to your advantage. Since they provide a quick and simple way to send promotions or updated site information, social media sites are an effective way to stay in touch with potential customers. Try not to be too sales-pitch heavy when you are using Twitter as a means of communication. Try to keep your posts valuable and insightful, and only include marketing in a portion of them.
Having an area on your website for users to post reviews is a great website marketing tool. When clientele post their actual experiences with your services and products, they are both possibly giving you word of mouth advertising that leads to new sales, as well as boosting your online presence with new and fresh content.
If you are using email marketing, you need to rotate links that are included in your correspondence. The link blocks that stay the same in each email are generally ignored. Your email readers will be less likely to lose interest if you keep changing up the links in your emails.
Offer information your customers can use if you want to build an online following. A simple page with details on your hours of business will not attract as many customers as a larger website would. Add reviews, articles and other content that will let prospective customers know that you are a business that knows your industry.
TIP! Make sure you use offer customers a guarantee, it is a surefire way to increase your success. People also know that companies sometimes don?t live up to their guarantees, so build up a reputation for honoring your promises.
Try to make people on your mailing list feel as though they are getting a thoughtful, personal email from you. Customers and whoever else you send email to would much prefer you address them directly instead of just sending an impersonal form letter. Are you sick of spam emails from companies? By sending personalized and targeted emails, you will set yourself apart.
Offering free courses or eBooks can be a great way to attract new customers and gain customer loyalty. Consider packaging this free course with a similar product so as to increase sales. You may wish to run an ad campaign detailing the course.
Including your signature in every outgoing email is crucial, even when it does not pertain to business. Spread your business card all over the cyber-world; you want as much exposure as possible. Your website will enjoy greater revenue and greater traffic thanks to this practice.
Add personal details to your campaign. Show who you are and what you represent to your customers. Share with the public your full name and a portrait of yourself. Create a statement to welcome visitors to your site. If it can be handwritten, that?s a nice touch.
TIP! A 500 error page that is user-friendly is an important tool to have. This happens when your code does not work properly.
Incorporating banners in a non-discrete fashion will help to improve your website. Use banners that are links to click on to get to more content. Many people avoid clicking banners, so this will tempt them to do so.
When trying to get people to advertise your site or have them link to it, make it simple for them to do so by including a link to us button. People who have a site that is related to your business in some way will often want to help out by using the add on their own site for their visitors to see.
This tactic is clearly important for your business. There are a lot of ways to go about this. There?s a vast amount of information out there about the benefits of this. By using this advice, you will soon get started with your online marketing campaign.
Read up on marketing studies that show what techniques are and are not effective in webpage design and marketing on the internet in general. The way people see your site can have a big impact on whether they decide to buy from you. Understanding this information can prove very crucial towards maximizing your overall profit.
TIP! Look into testing the emails that you send out to see what your customers think and how they respond. Look into A/B testing.

Intervention stopped early in NIH-funded study of weight loss in overweight and obese adults with type 2 diabetes after finding no harm, but no cardiovascular benefits
An intensive diet and exercise program resulting in weight loss does not reduce cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in people with longstanding type 2 diabetes, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health
The Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) study tested whether a lifestyle intervention resulting in weight loss would reduce rates of heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular-related deaths in overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes, a group at increased risk for these events.
Researchers at 16 centers across the United States worked with 5,145 people, with half randomly assigned to receive an intensive lifestyle intervention and the other half to a general program of diabetes support and education. Both groups received routine medical care from their own health care providers.
Although the intervention did not reduce cardiovascular events, Look AHEAD has shown other important health benefits of the lifestyle intervention, including decreasing sleep apnea, reducing the need for diabetes medications, helping to maintain physical mobility, and improving quality of life. Previous Look AHEAD findings are available at www.lookaheadtrial.org.
?Look AHEAD found that people who are obese and have type 2 diabetes can lose weight and maintain their weight loss with a lifestyle intervention,? said Dr. Rena Wing, chair of the Look AHEAD study and professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University. ?Although the study found weight loss had many positive health benefits for people with type 2 diabetes, the weight loss did not reduce the number of cardiovascular events.?
Data are currently being analyzed to fully understand the cardiovascular disease results. Investigators are preparing a report of the findings for a peer-reviewed publication.

A tactical unit responds to the shooting in Brookfield, Wis. (AP)
A shooting at a spa near a Brookfield, Wis., mall on Sunday left four dead--including the shooter--and four others wounded, police said. The suspected gunman, 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, of Brown Deer, Wis., was later found dead inside.
The shooting occurred at the Azana Spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall at approximately 11:15 a.m. local time, police said. Inside the spa, police found what appeared to be an improvised explosive device (IED), and a bomb squad was called in as officials worked to clear the two-story building.
"Our entire operation is focused on locating the suspect," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus said at a press conference earlier Sunday.
A spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital told the Associated Press that said four shooting victims were being treated for non-life threatening injuries at the hospital.
Authorities did not immediately release a motive. But according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a restraining order requested by Haughton's wife was issued against him on Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. And according to WISN-TV, she worked at the spa.
Haughton (Waukesha County Sheriff's Dept.)
Online court records showed that Haughton "was not allowed to have firearms and was directed to deliver firearms to the sheriff," the Journal Sentinel said. "The order does not indicate if that happened."
Following the shooting, the mall and a nearby country club were placed on lockdown. SWAT, FBI, fire and rescue officials responded to the shooting, and a Flight for Life helicopter landed in the mall's parking lot. Police and tactical units conducted a sweep of surrounding businesses.
A representative from the Department of Homeland Security arrived on the scene to offer investigative assistance, while police and FBI--assisted by a bomb squad--conducted a search of Haughton's home.
Earlier, a reporter from the Journal Sentinal spoke to the suspect's father, Radcliffe Haughton Sr., who said he told his son last week, "Don't do anything stupid."
Meanwhile, employees at the spa were asked to not speak to the media. "It is so important that things get figured out and settled first," a post on Azana Spa's Facebook page read. "Please continue to pray for all of those involved."
The suspect did not appear to have a presence on Facebook, but a Google Plus page for a Radcliffe Haughton includes a photo of a man who looks like Haughton displaying what appears to be a gun. A LinkedIn page lists Haughton as the owner of "Haughton International Corporation."
Rep. Paul Ryan, campaigning as the Republican vice presidential nominee in Iowa on Sunday, said he was "shocked and saddened" by the news out of his home state.
"As our community continues to heal from August's tragic violence, our thoughts and prayers are with today's victims and their loved ones," Ryan said in a statement. "Our gratitude also goes to the first responders who rushed to save lives and secure the scene. We will not allow the evil responsible for this heartbreaking event to triumph over the spirit of the people of Wisconsin. I ask all Americans to keep those affected by this event in their hearts, minds, and prayers today."
Sunday's shooting comes less than three months after Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran with white supremacist ties, opened fire at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., killing six and injuring three others before shooting himself.
And the spa is less than a mile from a hotel where a gunman opened fire during a Living Church of God service in 2005. Seven people were killed and four wounded in that shooting.

(Reuters) - Rights groups filed a class-action lawsuit on Friday against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, accusing it of unlawfully detaining immigrants at the behest of the federal government for days beyond when they should have been released.
The suit highlights the detention of a British filmmaker and legal immigrant, Duncan Roy, who spent 89 days in jail because of an erroneous federal immigration hold that left him unable to post bail, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
The lawsuit is the latest effort by rights groups to turn California into a so-called sanctuary state that protects unauthorized immigrants. That is in stark contrast to states such as Arizona that are engaged in crackdowns on illegal immigration which have sparked fears of racial profiling.
An immigration hold is a request by the federal government that they would like someone to remain in custody so they can seek deportation.
"This massive unconstitutional detention is a symptom of the criminalization of immigrants, a dangerous trend that must be reversed," Jessica Karp, an attorney for the National Day Laborer Organizing Network that was one of the groups involved in the suit, said in a statement.
In Roy's case, he was initially arrested on a misdemeanor extortion charge stemming from a falling-out with his ex-boyfriend, which resulted in a much longer stay behind bars than other people charged with similar crimes.
He said his extended jail stay could have exacerbated his prostate and colon cancer and seeks damages for his treatment.
Three Mexican immigrants and an Estonian who say they were unlawfully held were also party to the class action suit, filed on behalf of all current and future detainees held in a county jail for more than 48 hours solely for immigration holds.
Of the Los Angeles County jail population, around 14 percent - or roughly 2,100 people on any given day - are subject to Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds, according to the ACLU of Southern California, which was also involved in the lawsuit.
Those individuals are held in jail nearly three weeks longer than those without such holds, the group said.
A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Nicole Nishida, said the department was following federal law, and acting on behalf of federal immigration authorities.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said in a statement that the agency's cooperation with local law enforcement on immigration holds ensures that "potentially dangerous criminals are not released from prisons and jails into our communities".
Much of the rights groups' unease stems from an information-sharing program called Secure Communities, in which federal immigration officials and local law enforcement work together to deport illegal immigrants arrested for crimes.
The program, launched in 2008, helped the federal government deport a record of about 400,000 illegal immigrants last year.
Friday's legal action followed a failed effort by immigration rights advocates to pass a bill that would have shielded some illegal immigrants from federal status checks.
That bill would have prohibited local authorities from honoring federal immigration detention requests statewide unless the individuals involved were charged or convicted of a serious or violent felony.
California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed that bill in late September. The author of the legislation, Democratic Assembly member Tom Ammiano, has said he would revise and reintroduce the bill in the next legislative session, which begins in January.
Earlier this month, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said he wanted to institute a plan that would shield illegal immigrants arrested for low-level offenses from potential deportation by January 1. The county has no plans for a similar program.
