HOLMBERG: SykoSam letters from prison pretty much worthless, but ...

When it comes to collectibles, crime pays, but not very much.

And?particularly not a criminal like Richard ?SykoSam? McCroskey, the Farmville ax murderer.

Three of his letters apparently written in 2011 for the ?murderabilia? crime collector site Serial Killer Ink after his 2009 quadruple murder arrest ?brought $15 and up. Now the site Dark Vomit has them for twice that price. An autographed photo went for $25.

While disturbing to some, there?s absolutely nothing new here. Crime collecting goes way back.

Al Capone?s revolver sold not long ago for $100,000 and an autographed photo for $13,000. John Dillinger?s carved wooden escape gun brought some $20,000.

There are tons of letters, photos, drawings, paintings and memorabilia from the worst criminals and deadliest killers in our history. There are people who collect them. Avidly.

It?s a small, niche market that pales compared with sports and movies memorabilia, said collectibles author and expert William J. Felchner of Illinois.

?It?s the historical aspect and it?s an interest in the macabre,? Felchner said by telephone. Anything related to the Lindberg kidnapping, or the prohibition-era gangsters is always a big draw, he said. But a regionally known killer like McCroskey is not going to generate much interest. ?The bigger the body count, I hate to say it, but probably the more interest.?

But the fact that McCroskey?s lame-brained writings are surfacing is troubling to the man who prosecuted him.

?Because of the effect on the family? members of the victims, said James Ennis, Prince Edward Commonwealth?s Attorney. ?Because you keep giving him what he wants, which is celebrity status.?

It would be against the law for McCroskey himself to profit from his notoriety, and Ennis pledged to look into it to make sure he didn?t.

Serial Killers Ink, which reached out to McCroskey to produce the letters, sent out a statement Monday, saying in no way did McCroskey profit, and they believe he had innocent motives for wanting them to send him pictures of his ?victims, a request referenced in one of the letters.

There are those who want Virginia to join the eight other states that outlaw anyone from profiting from crimes in this way.

But why draw that line? New organizations make money covering these kinds of crimes and news magazines profit from recounting the horror in great detail.

What about places like the National Museum of Crime & Punishment in Washington?

And every other TV show and best selling novel is about some horrible crime ? and they?re getting more graphic and bizarre every day.

Let?s face it ? our society is infatuated with the dark side. Measured against that big bloody picture, the ?murderabilia? niche is just a tiny slice of a very nasty pie.

It?s no wonder these freaks try to out-do one another with their crimes.

Google Street View puts five national parks at click of a mouse

FRESNO, Calif.???Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the blue sky stretches up from the horizon.

Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road, where, in the east, iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.

The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California.

"Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."

The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.

Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.

Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.

The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.

Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world? "I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."

As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.

"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser-known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."

The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered.

Joe Zarki, a park ranger at Joshua Tree, said the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's visitors centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.

"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman, of the park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. It's a cool place, but it is remote. When they see those photos and the crystal clear blue skies they're going to want to come here."

Home Depot Adds Three New Major Appliance Brands - blog*spot

Home Depot may be the largest home improvement retailer but when it comes to selling major appliances it trails behind Sears, the leader, and Lowe's. In a seeming effort to change that, Home Depot has added three new appliance lines, Whirlpool, Electrolux and Frigidaire, brands that are already sold by its competitors. All three have fared pretty well in Consumer Reports appliance tests.

What Does Win-Win Negotiation Mean?

8:00 PM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> What Does Win-Win Negotiation Mean? What Does Win-Win Negotiation Mean?

sides can win when a product or service is bought and sold. Win-Win is not only obtainable, it is the ideal result. How then does it work?

Negotiation strategy always has a profound impact on business. There are four strategies; they are: Win-Win, Win-Lose, Lose-Win, and Lose-Lose.

Selecting the appropriate strategy depends upon how the parties value the Issue and the Relationship . A visual aid works well to explain this concept.

Draw a vertical line intersected by a horizontal line thus forming four quadrants. Along the top put the word "Issue". Use a plus sign (+) at the left to indicate "more" and a minus sign (-) at the right to indicate "less". Down the left had side, put the word "Relationship" with a plus sign at the top and minus sign at the bottom. These four quadrants represent the four different negotiation strategies available. The choice of negotiation strategy depends on the value we place on Issue and Relationship.

Let's begin with Win-Lose in the lower left quadrant because this is the type most frequently practiced. Many folks who profess Win-Win actually believe that all that matters is that they win. Sports competition conditions us to this conclusion because most often, there must be a winner and a loser. Can you hear the growl of the primitive instinct, "And I'm not going to be the loser!"

The appropriate time to use Win-Lose is when the Issue matters more than the Relationship. Then you want to win, and you don't care if they lose. A good example is labor negotiations. Assume that a company is losing business to overseas competitors whose labor costs are a fraction of the company's. The company has even weighed the option of locating a plant overseas to stay competitive. The Issue of competitiveness is more important to the company than the Relationship with the union. Indeed, if they do not become competitive, the Relationship will have no value because the company will be out of business and no one will be working. Win-Lose is the best strategies to pick for this type of circumstances.

Take Lose-Win next, in the upper right quadrant. This one is tough to grasp for many buyers when role playing as sellers. At purchasing seminars, I present this situation. Assume that your relationship with a good customer has grown chilly. Orders are down, communication is limited, yet you can not identify the problem. At a face to face settlement meeting, the chair you are offered across the buyer's desk is low and uncomfortable. If you sit, the sun will all but blind you. What should you do?

The most common responses from the buyers are "Remain standing", "Move the chair", and "Close the blinds". If Relationship is valued more than the Issue, the graphic above suggests that you should select Lose-Win. If you were to sit in the low, blinding chair, the customer can exercise control. By planning to lose over the Issue, you may allow the buyer to be comfortable enough to express the problem. Then, you can rectify it and preserve the Relationship. You might even increase sales as a result of your 'owning' up to your problem.

Lose-Lose, in the lower right quadrant may not seem to make sense, but in rare situations, it could. For example, suppose that you are assigned the duty of buying photography services for the company June outing. Every bona fide photographer has been booked for months for weddings, reunions, and graduations. The only photographers you can get are two college physics students, whose long-term career plans involve photographing gamma wave radiation!

This is a clear-cut demand for the Lose-Lose strategies. Who cares about the Relationship? It has no future. And as for the Issue, do you really want high-resolution photography of employees who have overindulged all day, maybe kissing the wrong spouse? To be sure, the conditions under which Lose-Lose is appropriate will be few, but it is the advisable choice in those rare instances when Issue and Relationship have little value.

Now we come to Win-Win, in the top right quadrant. Here, we recognize that one shot deals do not apply. Each party has a vested interest in the Issue and the Relationship. Think of this strategy as the basis for a marriage, a long term committed Relationship where Issues tend to have mutual importance. When the Relationship and the Issue are both important, the only appropriate strategies of negotiation is Win-Win. An example is the current trend in business to pare back the number of suppliers. The motivating force is to reduce costs and raise profits for both buyer and seller. The long-term business Relationship matters as much as the Issue of profitability. Win-Win should be the ideal strategies, and in all cases involving major customers and suppliers, should be our only choice.

Not only do we now know and appreciate just what the term Win-Win means, we also understand that other appropriate choices are available. These others, Win-Lose, Lose-Win, and Lose-Lose may be perfectly applicable, depending upon the Issue and the Relationship.

Jay Jaffe: Should the Texas Rangers trade Josh Hamilton?

Josh Hamilton has been feeling the heat from his bosses during a summer-long slump. (Landov)

The trading deadline is now four days away, and the Rangers have yet to strike. Indeed, all eyes are on general manager Jon Daniels as he sizes up the market for ways to improve the two-time defending American League champions, who are tied with the Yankees for the league?s best record at 59-39. Particularly with the loss of Colby Lewis to a torn flexor tendon and the uncertainty about Roy Oswalt?s balky lower back, Daniels? primary focus is on a frontline starting pitcher to shore up his rotation, and while his lineup doesn?t have any glaring holes, the team has scored just 3.44 runs per game this month en route to an 8-10 record. At the center of the sluggish offense is Josh Hamilton, who has admitted a lack of focus after being called out by both president/CEO Nolan Ryan and manager Ron Washington.

Here?s a thought from leftfield regarding the star leftfielder (and occasional centerfielder): The Rangers should consider trading Hamilton. On the surface, the idea might seem outrageous, and perhaps even heartless, given the support network the team has worked hard to build in order to aid the slugger in his ongoing battle against substance abuse. But particularly at this time of year, reminders that baseball is a business are everywhere, with underperforming teams stripped for parts as they look to the future rather than wallow in the recent past. Hamilton, a pending free agent, rebuffed the Rangers? efforts to sign him to a contract extension earlier this season, and while he has expressed a desire to return, he presents a whole lot of risk. He?s an elite hitter, at least when he?s healthy and focused, but he is also 31 years old and physically fragile, averaging just 114 games per season from 2009-2011 while serving stints on the disabled list for an oblique strain, a sports hernia, lower back woes, broken ribs, and a broken humerus. Admittedly, some of those injuries are traumatic ones that aren?t particularly likely to recur, but back and muscular problems don?t disappear with age, particularly for players on the wrong side of 30.

Hamilton jumped out to a ridiculously hot start this year, hitting .368/.420/.764 with 21 homers through the end of May, including a record-tying four-homer game on May 8 in Baltimore. Those numbers not only gave him a leg up on winning his second AL MVP award, they pointed towards a rare opportunity for a freshly anointed MVP winner to hit the free agent market. Not since Barry Bonds became a free agent after the 1992 and 2001 seasons has that year?s winner reached free agency, though one could also include Alex Rodriguez after he opted out in 2007, not that any team besides the Yankees could afford him.

Before Hamilton could clear his mantel for another trophy, he fell into a prolonged slump, hitting .223/.318/.436 with four home runs in June, and .154/.230/.308 with three homers ? and just seven other hits ? so far in July. The Rangers didn?t suffer too badly in June; while their scoring dipped to 4.82 runs per game (down from 5.71 in the two months prior), they went 19-9. But now the offense has really hit the skids, and Hamilton has shown no signs of emerging, going 1-for-15 in his last four games, and 6-for-42 since the All-Star break. Ryan says his star is giving at-bats away by swinging at bad pitches and failing to work deep into counts. Indeed, his swinging strike rates in June (21.6 percent) and July (22.6 percent) both lead the majors, as does this month?s out-of-zone swing rate of 50.9 percent. Hamilton, who has played in 90 of his team?s 97 games, has admitted that he?s ?out of sorts mentally,? and that his problems aren?t physical.

While trading a player in the throes of a slump isn?t ideal, Hamilton would instantly become the best bat on the market in terms of his overall 2012 production (.287/.356/.587 for a .315 True Average, 11th in the league), to say nothing of his track record (.306/.365/.548 career) or his upside. Even for a two-month rental, trading him would probably net a couple of top prospects, or a prospect and a usable stopgap outfielder. The Reds, for whom Hamilton played in 2007 (and for whom Hamilton?s ?accountability partner,? Johnny Narron, worked), would be a good fit: they need a centerfielder (Drew Stubbs is struggling mightily). That said, their system was hit hard by the Mat Latos deal, and they?re said to desire a right-handed bat given that their righties have hit just .245/.300/.391 this year. The Rays, who originally drafted Hamilton in 1999, could be another fit. Their offense has wheezed in the absence of Evan Longoria, they certainly have prospects that could be put towards the acquisition of a starting pitcher elsewhere, and could offer their own pending free agent outfielder, B.J. Upton, in return ? or they could work out a blockbuster involving James Shields, whom the Rangers are said to be considering as an alternative to Zack Greinke.

Could the Rangers withstand Hamilton?s loss? They hold a five-game lead over the Angels in the AL West, with the A?s just 5 1/2 back as well. Their odds of making the playoffs stand at 99 percent according to Baseball Prospectus. Considering that they won the AL West in each of the past two seasons with Hamilton missing a total of 70 games, it?s hardly an outrageous proposition. They would almost certainly need to add another outfielder to a mix that includes lefty David Murphy (.279/.374 /459, with only 36 plate appearances against southpaws), and righties Craig Gentry (a BABIP-driven .339/.398/.437) and Nelson Cruz (a disappointing .258/.320/.438). Add a player such as the Phillies? switch-hitting Shane Victorino (another pending free agent) or the righty-swinging Upton and the Rangers wouldn?t tilt too heavily to one side, though the latter is actually struggling mightily against southpaws. Such a move would put pressure on Cruz, Mike Napoli (.232/.349/.438) and Michael Young (a dismal .270/.299/.346) to recover some semblance of their prior form, but all have long track records of hitting well, and barring injury are better bets to improve their current numbers than to slump even further.

Trading Hamilton isn?t a necessity for the Rangers to reach the playoffs and make another run at a world championship, and it?s probably something that has less than a 10 percent chance of happening as things currently stand. Admittedly, it would be a shocking move, one that might not be popular with a fan base that has supported Hamilton through thick and thin. The team receiving the slugger would assume no small risk given his admission regarding his current state of mind as well as his track record for finding trouble. But so would the Rangers, who would take on a much different look than the unit that that currently leads the league in scoring at 5.03 runs per game and that has used a good deal of brute offensive force to become an AL powerhouse. Trading Hamilton just might be the move that helps Texas get over the top, and if so, it would be something the fans could forgive. Free agents come and go, but flags fly forever.

Know About the Dangers of Obesity And Heart Disease | Chicago ...

Obesity is a rising metabolic disorder that affects the entire world. Obesity is closely related to heart disease and other health issues. It is the condition based on the body mass index (BMI), calculating the fat ratio from a formula using the height and weight of the individuals.

The formula is weight in pounds divided by the height in inches squared divided by 703. The total of that calculation then is used against the chart to determine if the individual is underweight (18.5 or lower), healthy weight (18.5 24.9), overweight (25 29), or obese (30 +).

Obesity and coronary heart disease are closely related based on clinical studies. Obese people tend to have a higher risk of heart disease due to their other health related factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. The one contributing factor with heart disease is directly connected to the high cholesterol, which also has issues with clogging of the arteries; increasing the risks of heart disease in every individual, but is extremely higher in obese people.

People with high risks of heart disease; generally have other health issues that once were thought to contribute to the disease. Yet in recent studies it has been discovered those that are obese have a higher risk of heart disease; even without the other factors. Obesity causes heart disease since the obese person is not as active as the healthy weight individual is. The amounts of exercise play a role in heart disease.

Other contributing factors include the diet of the individual. Obese individuals tend to have a high caloric and carbohydrate diet, which blocks the blood vessels and can lead to heart muscle damage.

When the individuals limit their amounts of fat, sodium and starch, which are turned into fat when not burned up by the body with physical activity and exercise, the individuals can reduce their weight and risks of heart disease. Learning to eat a healthy diet will help with the levels of risks, while not completely removing the risks, if damage to the vessels and heart muscles has previously occurred; prior to the weight loss.

Medication is available for heart disease to help with the complications. Other methods are extensive such as surgery for heart bypass and heart transplants in extreme cases.

The fact of learning to take care of the heart and blood vessels, prior to any damage, is the most important factor, many need to realize. As once the damage is done to the cardio system, it is not possible to repair the damage; short of surgery and transplants.

Several methods are available to reduce the risks of heart disease including eating a healthy diet, avoid smoking, add a daily exercise regimen to the life style, and avoiding stress when possible.

Avoid soda whenever you?re thirsty. One of the first ingredients in soda is usually corn syrup, which is one of the worst types of sugar for your body. Sodas also have an ingredient called citric acid, which can erode and deteriorate your teeth. This erosion from the citric acid is coupled with the acid that is a by-product of bacteria growth, occurring on the teeth as a result of ingesting the corn syrup.

Nutritionists recommend staying away from overly-processed grains. If you take out the husks or hulls of the grains you will get rid of the source of the most nutrients and fiber. To make up for this, most people buy supplements or whole wheat products. No, that?s a silly thing to do.

For optimal health, be sure to drink plenty of water. There is more water than any other substance in your body and it is therefore necessary to hydrate yourself regularly. You should strive to drink at least eight glasses of water each and every day.

You have to understand good nutrition before you can implement it. When you?ve learned what you need to do, you won?t waste your time choosing the wrong foods. Nutrition is a science that should be understood if you want good nutrition.

If you want to improve your diet, eliminate certain foods from your meals. Sugar may be very harmful, it provides no nutritional value. Secondly, some ?white? foods, specifically rice and bread, have lower nutritional content than brown rice and bread. Be sure to consume only the healthy fats, other fats such as saturated fats, will negatively impact your cardiovascular health.

It?s best to stay away from food items that contain trans fats, which are found in many processed food items. You increase your chance of heart disease by consuming foods loaded in trans fat. Trans fats lead to a higher level of unhealthy cholesterol and lower good cholesterol.

Since healthy eating is a goal for life, you should always keep learning for your nutrition education. The tips you have read about are only a minute sampling of the wealth of nutrition information within your reach. Find other places for content in order to feed your body and mind.

If you are searching for how to lose weight fast , it is necessary to apply the optimal diets that work. Tips And Tricks That You Need To Know About Landscaping | Arty Apt

Choose plants according to the particular environmental requirements. This will vary on both a macro and a micro scale, not just by large geographic region but also by small niches within one landscaping plan. Most yards will have areas that are shadier or wetter than other areas of the yard. Take advantage of those particular environmental parameters by choosing the plants that are best suited for this micro niche.

Assess the shape and size of your property prior to buying anything for landscaping. You do not want to overspend because your property is much smaller than you had originally thought it was. On the other hand, you do not want to under spend and end up having too much space left over.

One of the most important tips one can use with regards to landscaping, is to come up with a plan before you start doing anything. It is important to carefully consider exactly what you want your yard to look like, and then make a detailed plan as to what steps you will need to take.

As you are planning your next landscaping project, remember that plants, and trees are not the only things that will add beauty to your yard. Colorful outdoor vases, birdbaths, and other yard art are available at any home improvement center, and can really add some beauty, and originality to your design.

If you are tired of seeing your beloved plants trampled by visitors, consider adding a footpath. Use brick, stone or wood to create a path that extends well beyond the boundaries of the area you wish to protect. A well-defined, wide path makes it clear which areas are safe as well as, which should not be trodden upon.

For big landscaping projects that will not break the bank, consider delaying your major plant purchases until mid-July. During this time, many lawn and garden centers offer significant markdowns on shrubs, trees and flowers. Do not worry if the plants do not appear quite as robust as they may have in the spring; most will survive the fall and winter months, then bloom in the spring.

Variety is the spice of the garden. If all of your plants are similar, nothing will stand out ? resulting in a boring garden. For example, a flower bed consisting of only yellow flowers will cause each individual plant to visually bleed into the next, losing all definition from plant to plant. Instead, plant contrasting colors next to each other. Each plant will pop out to the eye, instead of blending into the background.

Plant your flower beds in layers. With the small mature size of most flowers, flower beds work best when planted about three layers deep. Choose a tall flower for the back, a mid-sized flower for the middle and place tiny and delicate flower?s front and center. If you are planting a round bed, place the tallest plants in the center and work out from there.

It is generally a good idea to evaluate the sunlight that is available to you before you start landscaping. This way you can plan what sort of plants will go where so that they receive the optimal amount of sunlight. You don?t want to have plants die because of too little or too much sun exposure.

Whenever you are taking on a landscaping project yourself, you should always take into account your plant?s water use. Whether you are using drought-tolerant plants or plants that are very lush and green, the amount of water they use will vary drastically. Make sure that you understand what your watering needs will be before selecting your plants.

Beautiful landscape designs are those that take height and layering into consideration. By staggering plantings based on their probable stature when mature, it is possible to create a tableau that appears organic, rather than overly planned. This gives the appearance of a lush, natural garden instead of a formulaic grouping of predictable plants.

Be neighborly. Landscaping equipment is expensive. Before you spend money on it, see if any of your neighbors are interesting in landscaping their yard as well. If they are, suggest that you split the cost of equipment rental. You could save a lot of money by simply taking the time to be sociable.

Before you embark on a large landscaping project, contact your homeowner?s association, if you have one. Many neighborhoods have guidelines and specifications regarding what you can or cannot do to parts of your property that are visible to other neighbors. They can even force you to change things, if you are in violation of set rules.

Do not place plants in your garden just because they are your favorite kind. It is in your best interest to grow plants according to what complements your home and yard area. Growing something that clashes will only cost money and make your house look mismatched instead of more beautiful.

If you make a few simple changes around your yard, the whole look can improve. It?s important that you stick to your maintenance regime and ensure that any changes that you do make, remain in good condition as time goes by. After reading this article, you should be ready to make your yard look as good as you really are!

YouTube Promotes Anonymity with Face Blurring Tool

60-Second Tech60-Second Tech | Technology

YouTube recently introduced a tool that lets you automatically blur faces in footage you upload to the Web. Larry Greenemeier reports.

More 60-Second Tech

Amateur video of protests, violence and other news worldwide has become a staple of the Web. This exposure can be great for promoting a cause or revealing injustice. But it can also create problems for people appearing in these videos.

Law enforcement agencies, for example, have prosecuted people appearing in protest videos simply by analyzing faces and other clues in a piece of online footage.

YouTube, where most of these videos end up, isn't entirely comfortable with this loss of anonymity, especially when it's used to crack down on free speech. So the site recently introduced a tool that lets you automatically blur faces in footage you upload to the Web.

The site acknowledges that the new "Blur All Faces" feature isn't perfect. Sometimes it has difficulty picking out faces depending on camera angle, lighting, obstructions and video quality.

But preserving someone's anonymity online may help protect their privacy. That's a good thing, whether it?s a video of a Wall Street protest or just footage of your kids playing in the backyard.

Lots of Old News and a Rare Mushroom Find! - - Portland Food and ...

PFM Chard

Portland Farmers Market ? Chard

There is a new chef at the Brasserie Montmartre. Chef Johnny Nudd will lead the kitchen beginning July 24th. From the press release -

?Talented yet humble, and with experience in San Francisco, New
York, and Europe, Chef Johnny is the kind of chef I like to
collaborate with,? says Chureau, former chef-owner of Fenouil,
who has more recently revived the Brasserie as a new French-
American Brassiere since May of last year and who has opened
and operated Allium, a neighborhood farm-to-table bistro in West
Linn since 2010.

?Chef Johnny is well-equipped to carry on the talent started by
Chef Michael and lead the crew in what we?re creating here at the Brasserie.?

The Brasserie?s new Executive Chef has big shoes to fill. But his pedigree and talent promises?some exciting, new dishes. Hailing from the mid-Atlantic, Chef Johnny began his career in?finance but fell in love with cooking after moving to San Francisco. There, he worked with?Mark Franz at the famed haute-cuisine restaurant, Farallon, and opened the renowned Postrio?Rosenthal Brothers? Town Hall Restaurant.

He pursued his culinary career in New York City at Eleven Madison Park under Chef Kerry?Heffernan and then Michelin-rated Swiss Chef ?Daniel Humm. When a unique opportunity arose?in Madrid, Spain, Chef Johnny joined Chef Karen Bell, formerly of Farallon, and opened and
operated Restaurante Memento in the Alonzo Martinez district of Madrid.

Lured by the famed food town of Portland after a short visit in 2007, Chef Johnny was named?Executive Chef of restaurant (five-0-three) in West Linn. In June of 2010 Chef Johnny moved to?Portland and has led the kitchens first at RingSide Steakhouse and then at RingSide Fish House?which opened in July of 2011.

Serratto is highlighted on the Wine Spectator Restaurant Award list.?Serratto is highlighted in green, being recognized in the guide as having a wine list of exceptional value.? The only other Portland restaurants listed in the green category are Andina and Portland Prime ? the rest are elsewhere in Oregon. Bluehour received an ?Award of Excellence for ?having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world?.

Continuing the parade of ice cream shops, the new Ruby Jewel Scoop Shop opens at ?428 SW 12th?Ave. on July 28, 2012. ?The two-story space features Ruby Jewel?s small-batch artisan ice cream, and its new offerings include two flavors of soft-serve ice cream daily and an old-fashioned soda fountain with homemade syrups and signature ice cream sundaes. A new candy viewing area is available for guests to watch the making of homemade marshmallows, candied nuts and toffee brittle from the sidewalk or through an inside viewing window.

?Ruby Jewel ice cream was local from the beginning when owners Herlinger and Burnett sold their homemade ice cream sandwiches out of a cart at the Portland Farmers? Market. They partnered with Lochmead Dairy since 2005 in nearby Junction City for the hormone-free cream and milk and infuse their ice cream with flavors that include locally grown mint, honey, lavender and fruit. ?We even take our staff on berry-picking excursions to nearby Sauvie Island for our summer berry flavors,? says Herlinger. ?Our seasonal flavors take advantage of Oregon?s bounty ? from pumpkin and pear to blueberries and figs.?

The newest Barista Coffee has?officially?opened at?529 SW 3rd avenue. Owner Billy Wilson said much of the delays were caused by the age of the building, and a ?very old plumbing system, which had to be redone before the shop could be built?. ? From NPR?s The Salt, Fancy Names Can Fool Wine Geeks Into Paying More For?A Bottle

?Participants not only reported liking the taste of the wine better if it was associated?with a difficult to pronounce winery name. But they also reported about a $2 increase?in willingness to pay,? Mantonakis says. (Give or take six cents in U.S. dollars.) But here?s the fun part ? the more Mantonakis? test subjects knew about wine, the?more easily they got duped into thinking difficult wine names equaled pricier wines.?She says that?s because wine geeks will hunt for just about any subtle difference they?can find, like a unique sounding name. ?And if something is rare and unique then maybe it might be a higher value and it?maybe something that is more special,? she says. So that?s how you trick a wine geek.

As you probably know, chef Anthony Cafiero has left the popular Tabla restaurant to ?pursue other interests?. This is a huge loss for Tabla, and it will be interesting to see if they can keep up the quality. The big question however, is what Cafiero will do next. There has been lots of gossip floating around ? (I suggested he hire Kelley Swenson as a bartender). PDXEater pried a bit of information out of him.

Cafiero is currently in talks with backers to open a 30-seat ?modern tapas? concept called Raci?n, which aims to make modernist techniques more accessible as part of a playful, communal experience. Early designs revolve around two central bar spaces that provide the majority of the seating ? one bar features an open kitchen (with dishes passed over the counter to diners), the other, a cocktail bar featuring modernist drinks. ?We?re making spumas out of Campari, we?re making orange spheres that burst as you drink,? Cafiero says. ?We?re making hot-cold-hot-cold drinks that you eat with a spoon ? like Jell-O shots, in a certain way.?

You can read more from Eater here

Word on the street is that chef Philippe Boulot hasn?t had much to do with the Heathman Restaurant since he took over the MAC Club restaurant 4 years ago, but his name was still associated with the restaurant (for a?certain?fee, I?m sure) to give it some cachet. According to Michael Russell at the Oregonian, Boulot has now officially severed those ties. ? A large part of his decision may be the recent purchase of The Heathman by Texas-based Laundry?s, which holds?33 restaurant brands, including Landry?s Seafood House, Chart House, Rainforest Cafe, Saltgrass Steak House, The Oceanaire Seafood Room, Claim Jumper, Golden Nugget Hotels and Casinos. I?d run too ? haven?t seen such a long list of mediocre restaurants in a long time.

According to Eater LA, Stumptown Coffee Roasters is opening a roasting facility in Los Angeles. As Stumptown has expanded after their purchase by the investment firm TSG, the positive press has continued, with the NYTimes recently saying ?Stumptown is the leader, and the cutting edge of third wave coffee.? As this point the company is becoming so ubiquitous in the LA area, it?s even being served on food trucks. A local roasting facility makes sense to me.

A few more tidbits, these from OregonLive.com. Both the ice cream shop?Salt & Straw and French bakery Saint Honore will be opening on Division at 33rd place, giving each of the business three locations. This will put them in the same area as Ava Genes (going into the old Lauro spot), Pok Pok, Sunshine Tavern, Whiskey Tavern and Wafu. According to the O, the Salt & Straw ice cream cart should be open now!

This next story is probably not safe for work, but is so strange I couldn?t pass it by (besides, it was good enough for ABC News). A ?Sex Toy? was confused with an exotic mushroom in the Chinese Village of Liucunbu. Villagers drilling a well shaft found the?heretofore unknown species of? ?mushroom?, the called the local TV station, which sent over a reporter. ?They thought they had discovered a rare fungus?.

?It has an eye and a nose, but we don?t know what it is,? one of the villagers tells the Chinese reporter, according to an English translation from ABC.

But this was no miraculous mushroom. Several viewers pointed out the mysterious object was actually an artificial vagina ? a sex toy ? The Mirror notes.

?Ignorance is horrible. How can the reporter mistake a sex toy for fungus?? one viewer commented on his Weibo microblog, according to the Mirror.

The station responded by essentially throwing their reporters under the bus, saying they were ?young and unfamiliar with worldly affairs.?

To those of us who are still adolescent well into our late 50?s, the photo of someone measuring the, um, device, is?hilarious.?You can see the rest of the story along with the Chinese video here.

Lovejoy Bakers?is opening has opened a second location in SE Portland at 2523 SE 9th Ave, 97202. Owned by the couple behind the Pizzicato chain, Lovejoy East will function as a cafe and wholesale location. There is a nice umbrella shaded patio area for relaxing with your paper and a bit of food. I dropped by last week and had a pretty nice sandwich. They are open for breakfast and lunch until 2:00pm. You can check out their menu here.

In 2010, I posted a summary of the ?Top Ten Mistakes Made by Farmers Market Customers?. From my experience at the market last weekend, they could bare repeating.

Many of the suggestions are pretty obvious ? Don?t get there too late, bring your own bags (though many local market vendors provide them. Lots of people bring some sort of basket to carry things with, and you may find yourself buying more than you can comfortably carry. Remember, you?ll need to bring cash. Most markets don?t have any way to take credit cards, though you can frequently find a cash machine in the area if you hunt around.

Try to be adventurous with new produce, and ask the farmers questions ? I?ve learned about different varieties of produce that I would have never tried if the vendor hadn?t suggested them to me.?Ask them how they prepare the items you aren?t familiar with ? trust me, they know.

Veggies are usually cheaper than fruit. Don?t forget dairy products, such as eggs, fish, cheese and meat. All of these can be found here. Don?t bring pets ? the Portland Farmers Market has outlawed them this year. Don?t try to negotiate ? it?s not a flea market (though I?ve noticed prices sometimes drop at the very end of the day).

Finally, one rule I always follow. Walk the market first, taste what you can, look at what?s available and check the prices. Then go back and do your shopping.

The Accidental Locavore has added more advice. In summary,

  • if lots of people pick up a tomato to see how ripe it is and put it back down, it destroys the cell walls. Stop it!
  • If you taste a berry and like it, take the box you picked the berry from. Don?t refill it from another box.
  • Don?t shuck the damn corn! It not only dries it out at the market, but it will dry further on the trip home.

Their are more items in the full Locavore list here.

To those of you wondering, I?m way behind on putting together the Best Restaurant list. It takes quite a bit of time to visit the restaurants, write up a summary, track down photos and put them all into a post. It doesn?t help that it is perfect hiking weather! I will get it finished as soon as I can. Meanwhile, I?m going to be paying more attention to news ? I?ve been taking a break for months, as after almost 7(!) years of running this blog, I was finding it difficult to get excited about most of these things, and needed a respite. I will also be posting some answers to all the questions I received in the survey, and have a couple of reviews just about read to go. I?ll be doing those much more frequently too.

Tourist to pay $6,500 fine for '98 Cuba trip

A New York man agreed Tuesday to pay a $6,500 fine to settle a long-running dispute with the U.S. Treasury Department over a trip he made to Cuba as an unauthorized tourist 14 years ago.

Zachary Sanders, now 38, said he was 23 and had been living and teaching English in Mexico when he decided to go to Cuba for a couple of weeks in 1998.

"I wanted to learn about how a socialist country worked in practice," Sanders said in an interview. "I had no illusions. ... I'm not like some diehard supporter of the (Cuban) government or anything like that."

Varying enforcement of restrictions
The United States has long restricted U.S. travel to Cuba as part of a 50-year-old trade embargo aimed at punishing Cuba's communist government. The actual restrictions and the degree of enforcement have varied with different U.S. administrations and with the evolving state of U.S.-Cuba relations.

Sanders did not obtain the required U.S. Treasury license to visit Cuba and a U.S. Customs agent became suspicious when Sanders returned to the United States through the Bahamas without declaring that he had been to Cuba. The agent also seized an undeclared box of Cuban cigars from Sanders' luggage.

Two years later, Sanders received a letter from the Treasury Department asking for details of his expenditures in Cuba. He said he was scared, had lost the receipts and missed the deadline to return the form.

Photos: The new Cuba (on this page)

Another two years went by and the department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) reviewed his case during a Bush administration crackdown on travel to Cuba, notifying Sanders of its intent to fine him for failing to return the form. In 2008, an administrative law judge fined him $1,000.

Both sides appealed, and on the final business day of the Bush administration in January 2009, a Treasury administrator raised the fine to $9,000. He reasoned that the original fine was too low to discourage people from ignoring OFAC forms.

Sanders had a constitutional right not to provide incriminating evidence against himself, said his lawyer, Shane Kadidal of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Cuban dissident and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Paya dies in crash

Now a lawyer representing immigrants
By the time the fine was issued, Sanders had successfully battled cancer, completed law school and been admitted to law practice in New York, where he is a sole practitioner who mainly represents poor immigrants.

He also passed the bar exam in New Jersey, but was denied admission to that state's bar because he acknowledged that he had gone to Cuba knowing it was illegal.

Sanders sued OFAC, the Treasury Department and the Justice Department in federal court in 2009, appealing the fine as arbitrary and capricious. He lost and then turned to the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York, where Tuesday's settlement agreement was filed.

Full international coverage from NBCNews.com

'An ideological traveler'
Kadidal said Sanders' fine was still far greater than most Americans pay for violating the travel ban, and suggested he had been singled out because he was "an ideological traveler."

Civil penalties for tourist travel to Cuba can range up to $7,500 for the first trip and $10,000 for subsequent trips.

OFAC resolved more than 200 such cases for "a standard $1,000 settlement" from 2001 to 2004, Kadidal said, and dismissed many others with no fine at all.

Under the Obama administration, which has relaxed restrictions on travel to Cuba, OFAC has generally pursued cases against financial institutions and manufacturers that violate the embargo, rather than individual travelers.

The case is Sanders vs. Szuben, Case No. 12-601 cv in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Earnings Preview: Boeing's Commercial Airplanes Soar, Military and Pension Spending Drags

The Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA), the largest U.S. aerospace manufacturer, is expected to post higher revenue in the second quarter but lower earnings per share as cuts in military spending and pension expenses dampen profit from commercial airplanes.

Chicago-based Boeing reports second-quarter earnings before the market opens Wednesday. Analysts polled by Reuters expect revenue of $19.3 billion, up from $16.5 billion in the previous year. They forecast earnings per share of $1.11, down from $1.25 in the second quarter of the previous year.

The sale of commercial airplanes accounts for around 60 percent of Boeing's revenue. The company had orders for 109 narrow-body airplanes and 41 wide-body airplanes during the second quarter, in line with analyst forecasts.

In April, Lufthansa took delivery of the first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental passenger airliner.

In June, FedEx?Corp. said it will advance FedEx?Express unit's fleet upgrade to more fuel-efficient aircraft by buying 19 additional Boeing 767-300 aircraft.?This order is in addition to FedEx Express' agreement with Boeing announced in December to buy 27 new 767s for delivery between fiscal 2014 and 2018 and to delay delivery of 11 of the 777 aircraft to save on fuel and cut costs. FedEx said on June 19 it was focused on cost cuts to boost profit margins during a prolonged period of slow global economic growth.?

Earlier this month at the 2012 Farnborough Airshow in England, Boeing announced orders for 370 aircraft with combined market value of $35.3 billion, beating its main rival, European planemaker Airbus (Paris: EAD), which had orders for 115 aircraft valued at $16.9 billion. The announcements also indicated a busy second quarter for the sales team of the commercial aircraft group.

"Boeing dominated order announcements at Farnborough," wrote J.B. Groh, an analyst with D.A. Davidson & Co., in a July research note.?

Boeing's military business, which accounts for around 32 percent of the company's revenue, has a weaker forecast compared to its commercial plane division, due to potential federal budget cuts in military spending. The U.S. Budget Controls Act of 2011 calls for $487 billion in cuts over the next decade, which may impact results in the second quarter, according to Trefis.

In May, Boeing received a $365 million engineering, manufacturing and development contract to develop a design that modernizes the?flight?deck?and avionics of the U.S. and NATO fleets of E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, based on the 707.

Rising pension costs, due to low interest rates, are expected to trim profits in the second quarter. In January, Boeing said it expects to pay 83 cents more per share in 2012 compared to the prior year.

In April, the aircraft maker raised its full-year earnings guidance of $4.05 to $4.25 per share to $4.15 to $4.35 per share. Standard & Poor's estimated this month that the manufacturer's full-year earnings will be $4.55 per share.

Shares of Boeing fell 88 cents to $73.01 in late Monday afternoon trading.

Education Department Launches New website - Milwaukee ...

Written by admin ? // July 23, 2012 ? // 0 Comments

Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced a new streamlined website and several social media tools that will make it easier for students and families to navigate the financial aid process and make informed decisions about paying for college. The launch of the new website, StudentAid.gov, follows a report from the U.S. Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau about consumer protection issues with private student loans and recommendations to improve the student loan marketplace.

?We want to give students and parents the information they need to make smart and affordable education choices. A big part of that is educating people on the most affordable way to finance a college education: federal student aid,? said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. ?This new, easy-to-understand website will help families better navigate the process of planning and paying for college. And it will help students manage their loan payments after they graduate so they avoid falling into default.?

The new website, along with the Financial Awareness Counseling Tool that launched last week, serves as the Department?s response to President Obama?s June 7 directive to enhance online and mobile resources for loan repayment options and debt management. StudentAid.gov is the first step in a multi-phase project to provide consumers with a one-stop website where they can access federal student aid information, apply for federal aid, repay student loans and navigate the college decision-making process. The site combines content from several Department websites and presents the information in a straight-forward manner ? and it is designed to be fully accessible on tablets and smartphones. In addition, the Department has revamped its Federal Student Aid social media sites, including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, to provide more options for students to learn about student aid.

Also included on StudentAid.gov is the Student Loan Debt Collection Assistant, an interactive tool designed to help borrowers who have fallen behind on their federal or private student loan payments. The tool was developed in partnership with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and is also available through the CFPB?s site. For borrowers who have missed payments but are not yet in default, this tool can help them avoid thousands of dollars in penalties and fees by helping them access an alternative payment plan. For borrowers already in default on their federal student loans, this tool offers an added benefit ? clear information on how to access the full range of special repayment options available to federal student loan borrowers. The tool also provides tips to borrowers with private student loans on how to
