North Korea launches rocket in defiance of critics

SEOUL (Reuters) - Isolated and impoverished North Korea launched its second long- range rocket of 2012 on Wednesday in what it said was a bid to put a satellite into space.

The North launched the rocket close to the first anniversary of the death of former leader Kim Jong-il and as elections loom in South Korea and Japan.

The launch, reported by South Korean media, was confirmed by South Korea's Defense Ministry.

Pyongyang says it is entitled to launch a satellite into space but critics say the rocket development is aimed at nurturing the kind of technology needed to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile.

North Korea is banned from conducting missile and nuclear-related tests under U.N. sanctions imposed after its 2006 and 2009 nuclear tests.

The latest launch comes after a failed attempt in April that fizzled less than two minutes after blast-off.

Japan and South Korea put their armed forces on alert prior to the launch. The rocket is scheduled to pass between the Korean peninsula and China, with a second stage splashing down off the Philippines before launching the satellite into orbit.

Most political analysts believe the launch is designed to bolster the credentials of new leader Kim Jong-un as he cements his rule over the country of 22 million people.

A government official in Seoul said recently that the transition of power to Kim Jong-un did not appear to be going as smoothly as anticipated and there were signs that the regime was concerned over the possibility of rising dissent.

Kim is the third of his line to rule North Korea, whose national output is around one-fortieth of that of prosperous South Korea.

Plans for the launch has drawn criticism from South Korea, Russia, Japan and the United States as well as NATO and the United Nations.

The North's only major diplomatic ally, China, has expressed "deep concern" over the launch but is thought unlikely to back any further sanctions against its ally.

Cushman & Wakefield Canada CEO talks commercial real estate ...

The commercial property market appears to be on its way to a near record year for investment and new projects show the demand for office space is not slowing. The Financial Post?s Garry Marr sat down with the Pierre Bergevin, the chief executive of Toronto-based Cushman & Wakefield Canada, to talk about the state of Canada?s major markets, where rental rates are going and the ongoing battle with condominiums for land space.

Q Calgary just continues to grow with Brookfield Properties announcing it plans to build the tallest tower in the city at 56 storeys. Some tenants like Imperial Oil are finding it too expensive now. What?s next for the oilpatch?

A Everything in Calgary is bigger. The capital projects that are going on are in the billions and multiple billions. It?s like trying to stop a freight train. Nobody saw the vacancy rate decreasing in Calgary and becoming ridiculously tight in 2008. You think of The Bow [the new headquarters for EnCana Corp.], with the trailing vacancy it left behind, and nobody would have seen this coming. But now if you now need 20,000 square feet and up there is not a lot you can do. Imperial Oil moved [out of the core]; find me another example and we will talk a trend. If they wanted an option with the size of that tenancy, they would have to wait four years [for a new building to be constructed.] Is it an issue of wanting to go to the suburbs or are there no options?

Q How much has Vancouver?s market benefitted from the resource boom and how will the market there be affected by any slowdown in China?

A Vancouver is tight. There are three towers coming out and five planned. They are generally the type of floor plates you see on the West Coast, smaller tenants that are extensions of satellite offices from Asia-Pacific or the U.S. Vancouver is resource-based but less on oil and gas and more on wood and water. They are attracting some tech now which are growing into something bigger. Commercially they are not as tied [to China] as you think. That?s more residential. We are seeing wholesale development of investment from Asian investors planning for a major [commercial] development. We haven?t see that before.

Q Does anybody really care in the Montreal real estate world about the change in government to the Parti Qu?b?cois?

A I don?t think it?s met with as much fanfare as anticipated. We have three new towers in Montreal, all of which are scheduled to go. Nobody has stopped any investment that I?m aware of. When was last time three towers went up in Montreal without provincial government interference? It?s probably been 30 or 40 years.

Q Toronto already has 4.4 millions square feet of development happening right now, How much more new space can the city absorb?

A All of it is substantially leased. Based on rules on financing it wouldn?t be happening otherwise. It?s not so much about [companies] wanting to be back downtown as much as that?s where their labour wants to be. The decision to locate is predominantly about the people, especially if you are white-collar, knowledge-based and young. We are not building buildings for 20-year-olds. There is a whole group of that knowledge base that wants to be in an urban section.

Q Are condos actually impinging on commercial development, as space tightens in urban cores? Which asset class wins out?

A You can make more money with mixed-use development, more than two [of retail, office and residential]. In the case of Maple Leaf Square [in Toronto], there is even a hotel. Mixed is a self-contained community. In major global markets like in Asia you have second and third floor retails, though that may not fly here. It?s just a better use of density. It provides communities within communities. It provides the retail amenities for the people living there and it appeals to office tenants. As you migrate your core, those people want amenities. We have it London, New York. You need a big urban core so you may not get as much traction in Calgary, Winnipeg or Ottawa but in major urban centres. Place Bell [in Montreal] is an example.

Q What is driving the demand for commercial investment activity?

A There is almost $2-billion of industrial activity happening right now. It?s the chase for yield. People need to retire, they need income. The TSX Composite versus the TSX REIT [index], there?s almost a 41-percentage point difference over the last two years. It?s become a no-brainer. What is the alternative asset class? The spread between bonds and rates is 300 [basis points]. There is an argument that cap rates could go down [and prices further up]. The capital markets have raised over $6.3-billion year to date and we still have a year to go, that?s publicly traded stuff. That?s a record and it?s beating last year?s record. Look at the buyers, in every sector but industrial [real estate] 60% has gone to the [publicly] traded sector. Where is all this foreign investment? The pension funds, they?ve become the developers. [Return] on existing [property] is 5% and new build is 8% to 9%. The risk return favours new builds for pensions. The REITs have to be accretive, so they are buying.

Q Put yourself in the shoes of a tenant, where do you see rental rates going?

A They have less do with the economy than supply and demand. Rates are getting tighter everywhere. Any time your national central core vacancy rate is sub 5%, you are going to have upwards pressure on rates. Supply? It takes four years to build, once you have found someone who can wait for four years. Since it?s the pension funds, and they don?t have obligations until well down the road, they?ll come out of the ground when things are frothy. They know they?ll be substantially pre-leased. There is upward pressure on rates, and combine that with the fact your developers, pension funds have deep pockets, they can withstand all kinds of strife and not blink. These guys are about value, they don?t need income right away.

Baptist Hospital Employees Take On Wellness Challenge - WREG-TV

well4me

(Memphis) A hospital that is used to making people well is now challenging its employees to get in better shape.

Back in September, two employees of Baptist Memorial agreed to take part in the Well4Me six-month personal challenge program to lose weight and improve their health.

Melanie Polzin and Uriel Dukes are meeting regularly with a fitness expert, dietician and cardiologist.

They are also making better food choices and have gone from no exercise to working out at least three days a week.

?I was tired of being tired. I?m a cardiovascular ICU nurse manager and I?m not in the optimum health. How is somebody going to take me seriously, you know,? said Polzin.

Polzin, who is a cardiovascular ICU Nurse, has already lost 14 pounds, and Dukes, a respiratory therapist, has lost 10 pounds.

?We did my entire blood work and my cholesterol is high. They are, like, you are on the road to being a diabetic. It?s like wow. So, I kinda gotta get it together,? said Dukes.

Polzin and Dukes are motivating others by blogging about their experience.

To follow their journey log on to http:/www.well4mememphis.com.

Gold and Silver Prices Set to Explode

Now that the presidential election is over we can hopefully look forward to some respite from the perpetual bombardment dished out by both the Republican and the Democratic Party machines. President Obama has been re-elected so we can expect four more years of a Washington centric controlled economy with a rolling program of borrow, print, spend and pretend, similar to the last four years. The so called fiscal cliff will not be met head on, the approach will be one of extending some of the tax cuts now in place and a watered down strategy of fiscal prudence. Budget ceilings will come and go and the deficit will grow ever larger as the economic recovery will be considered far too fragile for any serious attempts at financial reform. All in all nothing has really changed, the slow motion train crash will continue and the fallout will affect everyone.

One of the casualties will be the dollar as quantitative easing will be applied in ever increasing doses, devaluing the dollars? worth and its buying power. However the race to the bottom is alive and well as other nations will adopt similar strategies in an attempt to remain competitive and so Act Two reads like Act One.

The chart below shows the 50dma crossing over the 200dma in a downward motion which is sometimes referred to as the ?cross of death? as it usually signals that a negative move is upon us. We now expect the dollar to drift lower and test the ?72? level on the US Dollar Index.

US Dollar INdex Cash Settle

The demise of the dollar and other fiat currencies brings with it an increase in the price of hard assets. Over the last decade or so our hard asset of choice has been the precious metals sector, mainly physical gold and silver and they have served us well. Individual investors have their own unique preferences, some preferring land, property, fine art, other commodities, etc. As we don?t have any expertise in those areas of investment we will leave them for others to comment upon.

The chart below shows that gold prices have been through a lengthy period of consolidation following an all-time high formed in 2011. We draw your attention to the 50dma which has crossed over the 200dma in an upward motion which is sometimes referred to as the golden cross. Also note that gold returned from its recent high to take tea with the 200dma, which is a real good starting point for its next rally. The technical indicators are turning up from a low level and the MACD looks likely to form its own crossover suggesting that that gold prices are about to move higher.

Gold Index Spot Price

Our own opinion is that gold and silver will rally from this point through to the early part of next year making now a good time to accumulate more of the physical metals. Once above the $1800.00/oz level gold will be well positioned to make a run at a new all-time high. We also expect silver prices to catch the wind and move to much higher ground. The gold to silver ratio currently stands at 54, if this ratio were to contract, as we suspect it will, then silver prices could well and truly explode, just as it has done in the past. So stepping out and acquiring a few more ounces of silver should also serve you well.

Alternatively, investing in a small selection of good quality gold producers is the preference of many investors and indeed we were buyers of such stocks in the early years of this bull market. At the moment we are not enthusiastic about them as they appear to lack the ability to keep pace with gold as evidenced by the HUI (the gold bugs index of un-hedged gold producers) which is trading at a disappointing 485.56. Please don?t be put off by us though as many of our peers see the mining sector as a good buying opportunity at these levels.

As speculators we look for a ?leverage? return when placing a trade and so our attention is focused on the options sector. If we are correct in our premise that both gold and silver are going higher then a few well thought option trades should provide our portfolio with a real boost, well that?s our plan and we are sticking to it, as they say. You will need a strong stomach as the oscillations can be a tad nerve racking and you will also need the discipline to close trades on a frequent basis as options are not a ?buy and hold? for the long term vehicle. Time is of the essence with most options expiring worthless.

Finally, move out of the folding stuff as and when you can and acquire some hard assets in a sector that you are comfortable with and be prepared to work your socks off as none of this is going to be easy, it is going to be a white knuckle ride with violent oscillations being the order of the day. If you can find the time to do your own ?due diligence? then you should survive and even prosper in the coming years so please give your own financial situation the attention it deserves.

Take care.

New way to prevent recurrent ear infections?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eliminating bacteria's DNA and boosting antimicrobial proteins that already exist may help prevent middle ear infections from reoccurring. These are the findings from a Nationwide Children's Hospital study that examined how an immune defense protein common in the middle ear interacts with a structure meant to protect a colony of bacteria.

The bacterium nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) causes a wide range of diseases of both the lower and upper airways, including middle ear infection. NTHI, like most other bacteria, can form a biofilm, a robust community of bacteria that allows the bacteria to evade the host's immune system and protects the bacteria from antibiotics and other therapies designed to kill them.

Human beta-defensin-3 is an antimicrobial defense protein expressed in the middle ear of humans and other mammals that kills both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Previous research has shown that if expression of beta-defensin is disrupted, the host's ability to control the bacteria in the upper airway is altered and infection worsens.

Investigators in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital hypothesized that human beta-defensin-3 might lose its power to kill NTHI if it got caught up within the extracellular DNA that makes up a biofilm's outer layer, thus preventing its contact with bacteria within the biofilm.

"Antimicrobial host defense proteins, like human beta-defensin-3, have been shown to bind to non-host DNA," says Lauren O. Bakaletz, PhD director of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis "This interaction has an impact on the defense protein's ability to function."

Upon examining their animal model of middle ear infection, Dr. Bakaletz' team found that bacterial DNA and the animal's defense peptides were detected together in biofilms that developed during infection. Also, the defense peptide was predominantly co-localized with the biofilm's extracellular DNA.

When the team exposed the bacteria that cause ear infections to a concentration of human-beta defensin-3 that is typically detected in the a middle ear of a child with active infection, the peptide was able to kill 100 percent of the NTHI, but the killing stopped when extracellular DNA was introduced to the reaction.

"These data support the conclusion that the killing activity of the antimicrobial defense protein was decreased in an NTHI-induced biofilm due to its interaction with eDNA," says Dr. Bakaletz, who is the lead study author and professor of Pediatrics and Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

When they removed extracellular DNA from the biofilm, the killing activity of the defense peptide was rescued.

"The ability to restore antimicrobial defense protein activity is encouraging, since biofilms are resistant to most treatments, including traditional antibiotics," says Dr. Bakaletz.

Dr. Bakaletz says this study provides evidence for a new treatment regimen to target biofilms formed by NTHI during middle ear infection. One approach would be to deliver a therapeutic agent that can disrupt bacterial DNA, in conjunction with human beta-defensin-3 to the middle ear of a child with chronic, recurrent infection. Physicians could follow the same pathway used to target the middle ear during ear tube surgery, a common treatment for chronic ear infections.

"This approach would likely bolster the ability of the innate immune system to manage NTHI-induced biofilms, avoiding the need for antibiotics or empowering the use of antibiotics we already have in our arsenal," says Dr. Bakaletz. "Doing so could help diminish the recurrent nature of middle ear infection."

Want to be Hungarian? Buy some bonds

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Lawmakers in indebted European Union member Hungary are waving the prospect of a passport at well-heeled foreign investors.

Proposed legislation listed on parliament's website would grant permanent residency and ultimately Hungarian citizenship to outsiders who buy at least 250,000 euros ($322,600) worth of special government bonds.

Hungarian passport holders are entitled to live and work throughout the European Union.

The move, backed by the ruling government party, is designed to attract new investors, especially from China.

Hungary has billions of euros worth of foreign currency debt maturing in the next few years and has explored a variety of ways to refinance.

Its plans include selling euro-denominated bonds to domestic buyers and trying to attract major new investors from Asia. Selling debt in western bond markets would happen only after tricky talks with international lenders wrap up, the government has said.

Budapest has asked for a financing backstop from the EU and the International Monetary Fund, but talks are dragging on and analysts see only a 50 percent chance of a deal.

The proposed legislation calls for the debt management office to issue special "residency bonds" to foreigners. Holders of at least a quarter of a million euros' worth of the paper would get preferential immigration treatment.

"The goal of the modification is to create the institution of 'investor residency' in Hungary," the lawmakers who put forth the legislation wrote in their proposal.

"The proposal ties gaining citizenship to buying bonds because it intends to aid state financing this way," they wrote. "Other investments from those applying for such residency could boost the real estate, retail and investment markets."

One of the authors of the proposal said Chinese investors were specifically targeted.

"The Chinese have articulated repeatedly that we should help their Hungarian investments," ruling party lawmaker Mihaly Babak told the daily Nepszabadsag. "If someone is a Hungarian citizen they have more (investment) opportunities."

"The condition of a preferential process is the purchase of 250,000 euros worth of bonds with a five year maturity ... We can attract capital from the so-called Third World this way and also finance reducing state debt."

Diet, Diabetes, And Doubt: Is Preventive Medicine Lost In Space ...

From US News & World Report?..

A large federal trial, looking at lifestyle?diet and exercise?for the treatment of diabetes was just terminated because, after 11 years, it wasn?t working as intended. The Look AHEAD study was stopped early because it was not reducing the rate of heart attack and stroke in the intervention group relative to the control. The termination was reported in a press release by the National Institutes of Health, and picked up by mainstream media. The findings suggest that diet and exercise are not effective for reducing the cardiovascular complications of diabetes.

And so, AHEAD, or at least the media coverage of it, is inviting us to look back, and doubt what we thought we knew about diet as the best medicine we?ve got?for diabetes, at least. We thought we knew that lifestyle was among the most powerful determinants of health outcomes. We thought we knew that diet and exercise together could prevent heart attacks in high-risk people. Participants in the AHEAD intervention lost 8 percent of their body weight by the end of the first year of the trial and were still down 5 percent from their baseline weight at the four-year mark. We thought we knew that diet, exercise, and weight management like this exerted important influences on the course of diabetes. Now, the AHEAD findings suggest we were wrong. Right? Not so fast.

For one thing, the trial did generate many noteworthy benefits. Prior papers in the Archives of Internal Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine have reported significant benefits of lifestyle intervention related to weight loss, fitness, blood glucose levels, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and mobility. The study was terminated for failing to prevent heart attacks and strokes, but it did reduce medication use, and conferred other benefits?such as a significant reduction in sleep apnea.

Facebook woos back Wall Street as shares rise

Facebook shares are on track for their largest percentage gain ever, with Colin Sebastian, Robert W. Baird & Co.

By Cadie Thompson, CNBC.com

Wall Street seems to like?Facebook?again for the same reason it used to hate it. That reason can be summed up in one word: mobile.

The social network's stock had its biggest single-day surge since the company went public in May.?Facebook's?shares were up 19 percent to close at $23.23 Wednesday, and the company was a top gainer on the?Nasdaq.

Multiple brokerage firms raised their price target for the social media company Tuesday after it reported a 32 percent increase in revenue and a surprising increase in mobile advertising in?its third quarter earnings.

"We definitely knew that the mobile side of the business was strong, but the magnitude of the growth and revenue was shocking I think to everybody," Jordan Rohan, managing director at Stifel Nicolaus, said Wednesday?CNBC's Halftime Report.

"The fact that in May they had essentially zero mobile revenues and for the September quarter $150 million in revenues, that is something that I think caught everybody by surprise."

Facebook's revenue jumped to $1.26 billion from $954 million a year ago in the third quarter, a 32 percent increase. Advertising revenue increased by 36 percent to $1.09 billion, a 36 percent increase from a year ago. (Read More:?Facebook May Get $1 Billion From Mobile.)

Barclays Capital,?Jefferies,?Macquarie Equities Research?raised their price targets on the company, while?Citigroup,?BofA Merrill?and?Stifel?raised their rating to a buy.

Mobile advertising concerns have weighed heavily on Facebook shares since the company's initial public offering in May when the stock sold for $38 per share. But the recent earnings report may be a sign that Facebook's mobile problem is a thing of the past, Rohan said.

"What's exciting about Facebook right now is we actually have now turned the corner. Six months ago mobile was the enemy at some level. Mobile was the force that would reduce monetization for the overall Facebook platform," Rohan said. "Now mobile...is actually a friend to Facebook."

Why astronauts experience low blood pressure after returning to Earth from space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? When astronauts return to Earth, their altitude isn't the only thing that drops -- their blood pressure does too. This condition, known as orthostatic hypotension, occurs in up to half of those astronauts on short-term missions (two weeks or less) and in nearly all astronauts after long-term missions (four to six months). A new research report published online in The FASEB Journal solves the biological mystery of how this happens by showing that low gravity compromises the ability of arteries and veins to constrict normally, inhibiting the proper flow of blood.

Prevention and treatment strategies developed for astronauts may also hold promise for elderly populations on Earth who experience orthostatic hypotension more than any other age group.

"The idea of space exploration has been tantalizing the imagination of humans since our early existence. As a scientist, I have had the opportunity to learn that there are many medical challenges associated with travel in a weightless environment, such as orthostatic hypotension, bone loss and the recently recognized visual impairment that occurs in astronauts," said Michael D. Delp, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, and the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. "Although I have come to realize that it is unlikely I will ever get to fulfill my childhood dream of flying in space, I take great satisfaction with helping in the discovery of how microgravity alters the human body and how we can minimize these effects, so humans can safely explore the bounds of our universe."

To make this discovery, Delp and colleagues examined arteries and veins from mice housed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with blood vessels from groups of mice flown on three of the last five space shuttle missions -- STS-131, STS-133 and STS-135. Mice flown on the STS-131 and STS-135 missions were tested immediately after returning to Earth, whereas mice from STS-133 were tested one, five and seven days after landing. Not only did they find that these mice experienced the equivalent of orthostatic hypotension in humans, they also discovered that it takes as many as four days in normal gravity before the condition is reversed.

"There has been considerable interest in sending humans to the moon, asteroids, and Mars," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but what we're finding is that extended space missions have their own inherent risks above and beyond the obvious. If we ever hope to visit distant worlds for extended periods of time -- or colonize them permanently -- we've got to figure out how to mitigate the effects that low and no gravity has on the body. This report brings us an important step closer to doing just that."

Homeschoolers and Mathematics? ? Homeschooling Research Notes

This post reviews Kathleen Ambruso Acker, Mary W. Gray, Behzad Jalali, and Matthew Pascal, ?Mathematics and Home Schooling? in Notices of the AMS 59, no, 4 (April 2012): 513-521.

All four authors of this paper are affiliated with American University.? The stated aim of this misleadingly titled paper is to analyze the legal framework for homeschooling, noting especially the place of mathematics in it, and then to examine how well homeschooling prepares students for college and employment.

The first part of the article, on legal matters, is an odd pastiche of themes lifted from my book and from work by Jim Dwyer and Kimberly Yuracko.? It is entirely derivative and tends to leap from topic to topic without much of an overarching theme or organizational scheme.

After several pages of meandering commentary on various court cases, historical matters, and state regulations, the authors finally get to the issue of mathematics.? Here the extent of their analysis is to summarize what the various state homeschooling laws and regulations have to say about math.? Here?s the summary:

currently twenty-eight states and the District of Columbia use ?mathematics? for a topic to be learned by those who are home schooled, although content is not specified.? North Dakota and Pennsylvania are two states that detail the number of mathematics credits and mention algebra as required study.? Seven states note that subjects covered should be comparable to those in the curriculum of the public school system.? Three other states only require that students learn arithmetic, and no mention is made of higher mathematics.? In Vermont the statutory language for required topics notes that students should study the use of numbers.? Although the state of Oklahoma strongly recommends the study of mathematics, it does not require it by law.? Only three states impose on home-schooled students, by law, high school graduation requirements that include mathematics. (p. 517-518)

After noting how sharply this lax attitude toward homeschooling contrasts with the intense emphasis in public education on mathematics accountability through high-stakes testing, the authors introduce their final theme.? It is the potential discrimination against girls that might be occurring in homeschooling families who believe that their daughters, whom God created solely to be mothers, should not take math or go to college.? The only evidence they cite that this may be happening is lifted entirely from Yuracko?s article I reviewed here, and it consists of quotes from two advice books written by fundamentalist Christians to homeschooling girls.

After finding that states don?t really require much math of homeschoolers and don?t really enforce even what they do require, and after worrying that there may be a generation of young homeschooling girls not being given the basic mathematics education necessary for many good jobs today, the authors conclude by recommending regulations lifted entirely from Judith McMullen?s 2002 piece ?Behind Closed Doors,? which appeared in the South Carolina Law Review (but is not in their reference list).? McMullen wants all homeschoolers to be required to register, to take vaccinations, to be given ?age-appropriate competence testing in reading and mathematics,? and to receive some kind of independent monitoring.

Aside from the one paragraph that summarizes state laws about homeschooler math requirements, there?s nothing new or interesting in this piece.? I have no idea why it was published.? We need good studies of homeschooling and mathematics.? When I saw the title of this piece I was looking forward to reading what these four authors had discovered.? But all I got was a weak summary of older work.

A sense of control, even if illusory, eliminates emotion-driven distortions of time

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? We humans have a fairly erratic sense of time. We tend to misjudge the duration of events, particularly when they are emotional in nature. Disturbingly negative experiences, for example, seem to last much longer than they actually do. And highly positive experiences seem to pass more quickly than negative ones.

Researchers say they have found a way to lessen these emotion-driven time distortions. Having a sense of control over events reduces the influence of emotions on time perception, the researchers report. This is true even for highly reactive emotional individuals and even if one's sense of control is an illusion.

The researchers describe their findings in a paper in Frontiers in Psychology.

Previous studies have found that highly arousing emotional experiences lead to the time distortions described above. Most people report that highly arousing positive images (erotic pictures, for example), viewed briefly on a computer monitor, flash by more quickly than disturbingly negative ones (of a dismembered body, for instance), even when the images are viewed for the same length of time. In contrast, low arousing positive or negative images (of a flower or mop, for example) tend to have the opposite effect: Most people report that mildly positive images seem to last longer than mildly negative ones do.

"We imagine that we're perfect at judging time, but we're not," said University of Illinois postdoctoral researcher Simona Buetti, who conducted the study with psychology professor Alejandro Lleras. "If you see a disgusting image, like a photo of a mutilated body, you will perceive this image lasting longer than if you see a picture of people on a roller coaster, or an erotic image. The major contribution of this study is to show that when you give participants a feeling of control, even if it's not perfect and even if it's totally illusory in an experiment, then you can make all these time distortions vanish."

Previous studies also exposed participants to positive and negative images to determine their effect on cognition, Lleras said.

"But in these previous studies, participants never had a sense of control over the experimental events. Images were just presented and participants simply reacted to them as they appeared," he said. "What is novel in our study is that participants are for the first time being given a sense that they can control the emotional events that they are witnessing in the lab."

In a series of experiments, the researchers asked participants to press keys on a keyboard to try to increase the frequency with which positive (or, in one experiment, negative) images appeared on a computer monitor. In reality, the participants had no control over the images; the researchers manipulated the ratio of positive to negative images to give them the impression that they were controlling -- or failing to control -- the emotional content of the images.

The researchers also tested a subset of participants who had a strong aversion to spiders. Buetti and Lleras reasoned that if control could alter the way people experienced emotional events, a particularly rigorous and useful test of this hypothesis would be to see if this held true in subjects who had very strong emotional reactions to images of spiders.

As in previous studies, when participants experienced low levels of control over experimental events, they tended to overestimate the amount of time they looked at highly arousing negative images (including photos of spiders) in relation to the amount of time they viewed highly arousing positive images. Buetti and Lleras also discovered that the more a person feared spiders, the more he or she tended to overestimate the duration of spider images.

"For spider-fearful individuals, it's as if time slows down when they are confronted with spiders," Lleras said.

But when the researchers induced a high level of perceived control in participants, the time distortions associated with the emotional content of the images went away.

"Even among spider-fearful participants, images of spiders no longer slowed time," said Lleras, who also is an affiliate of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.

"Across experiments, we found that the same images, the same horrible or positive images are actually treated differently if you give a sense of control to participants," Buetti said. "All of a sudden, they're looking at the world differently; they're reacting to the world differently."

Some time distortions returned, however, when in a final experiment participants were made to feel in control of negative events (the viewing of mostly negative images). When they pursued a goal that violated their basic instincts and desires for well-being, Lleras said, their sense of control "failed to inoculate them from the time distortions associated with viewing very disturbing negative images."

The new findings have implications for future studies, the researchers said.

"We now know that experiments on emotion processing can lead to dramatically different outcomes depending on whether participants are offered a sense of control over experimental events or not," Buetti said.

(AP) ? Left-hander Barry Zito will start the World Series opener for the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night against Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday he will go with Zito, who has resurrected his career this year. Zito's stellar outing in a 5-0 victory on Friday night in Game 5 of the NL championship series at Busch Stadium helped San Francisco rally from a 3-1 series deficit against the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals to return to the World Series for the second time in three years.

The Giants have won Zito's last 13 starts dating to Aug. 7. The $126 million pitcher was left off all three rounds of the 2010 postseason when San Francisco won the franchise's first championship since moving West in 1958.

'47 Percent' Videomaker Weighs In On Final Presidential Debate

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- When Mitt Romney came to Boca Raton -- the site of tonight's debate -- last May, he regaled a private fundraiser with a tale from his time in China, when he and a Bain Capital colleague went to inspect a factory he was considering purchasing. The conditions he found there shocked him, but he turned it into an uplifting story, noting that the factory's barbed wire was -- according to their tour guide, at least -- in place not to keep the young women locked in, but to keep desperate job seekers locked out.

It was that portion of Romney's talk that so profoundly affected one man in the room, moving him to upload the comments on YouTube and ultimately release the video that is now known by just a number: 47 percent.

HuffPost met up with the clandestine filmmaker on Monday, and asked him what thoughts he had going into the foreign policy debate.

"Romney has been talking about getting tough on China lately. From what I heard at the dinner, he's more interested in getting tough on the young Chinese girls at his sweatshop," the man said, continuing to request anonymity. "Unless we stand up for those girls in China, our mothers, sisters and daughters here are doomed to the same fate. Just ask the Sensata workers. If he could get rid of the unions, he would have no problem paying U.S. workers a 'pittance,' stacking them three high, 12 to a room. Romney is dangerously out of touch with the struggles of hard-working Americans."

Sensata is a reference to a Bain Capital-owned factory in Illinois. Bain is closing the plant, laying off the workers, and shipping production to China. The factory is scheduled to close for good in early November, and the American workers were asked to train their Chinese replacements.

Romney himself has profited handsomely from Sensata Technologies through his ongoing investment with Bain. The workers have pleaded with Romney to intervene; he has so far declined to do so.

More BBC staff probed on sex claims post-Savile

LONDON (AP) ? A sexual abuse scandal shaking the BBC broadened Tuesday, with the broadcaster's chief saying the corporation was investigating claims of abuse and harassment against as many as 10 former and current staff.

The BBC has been rocked by allegations that longtime children's host Jimmy Savile, who died last year, abused underage teens over several decades, sometimes on BBC premises. Some of the alleged victims have accused other entertainers and BBC staff of participating in abuse during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Director-general George Entwistle told British lawmakers Tuesday that the BBC is looking into historical allegations of sexual abuse or harassment against "between eight and 10" past and present employees.

Separately, the BBC press office said it was aware of "nine allegations of sexual harassment, assault or inappropriate conduct" involving current staff or contributors to the BBC, which employs some 20,000 people.

Entwistle said it was too early to say whether sexual abuse had been endemic within Britain's publicly funded national broadcaster, but insisted the BBC would assist police if detectives chose to investigate whether there had been a pedophile ring at the corporation.

Entwistle acknowledged there had been "a problem of culture within the BBC ... a broader cultural problem" that allowed Savile's behavior to go unchecked.

"There is no question that what Jimmy Savile did and the way the BBC behaved ... will raise questions of trust for us and reputation for us," Entwistle said. "This is a gravely serious matter, and one cannot look back at it with anything other than horror."

Entwistle's testimony before the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee came a day after the BBC aired a powerful documentary about the corporation's role in the expanding sex abuse scandal involving Savile, who died a year ago at age 84.

Since Savile's death, scores of women and several men have come forward to say the entertainer ? a longtime host of music and children's programs including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" ? abused them when they were children or teenagers. Police have identified more than 200 potential victims.

The BBC, one of the world's largest and most respected broadcasters, is under fire for failing to stop the abuse and for pulling an expose on Savile from TV schedules at the last minute in December. The sex allegations were later aired on the rival ITV network.

The head of the BBC's "Newsnight" program, Peter Rippon, has been suspended pending an investigation of his decision to scrap the Savile story.

Monday's documentary, which was watched by more than 5 million people, presented the unusual spectacle of BBC journalists grilling their own bosses about why the piece had been dropped.

In an attempt to get to the bottom of the story, the parliamentary committee spent two hours Tuesday questioning Entwistle, who has been in the BBC's top job for just a month, after years in senior news and current affairs roles.

It may also want to question his predecessor, Mark Thompson, who led the organization at the time the "Newsnight" report was yanked. Thompson was appointed chief executive of the New York Times Co. in August and is due to take up the post next month.

He told ITV News that if "the police inquiry or the select committee want to hear from me, of course I'll help in any way I can."

Few public figures have had as spectacular a fall from grace as the cigar-chomping, platinum-haired Savile, who was knighted for his charity fundraising and praised on his death as a popular if eccentric entertainer.

Since the ITV report aired earlier this month, his family has removed and destroyed his gravestone, and two charities named after him have announced they will close.

It is not just the BBC that is under fire. Schools and hospitals associated with Savile's charity work stand accused of letting him abuse young people during visits. And state prosecutors have acknowledged they investigated four abuse allegations against him in 2009, but did not press charges.

Child welfare experts say there is a sadly familiar pattern? seen also in the case of child-molesting Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky or pedophile priests in the Roman Catholic church ? of large organizations failing to act on claims of abuse from young people.

One of the revelations of Monday's documentary was that Rippon had sent an email expressing doubts about the Savile documentary because "our sources so far are just the women" ? Savile's accusers.

Entwistle insisted the BBC was not complacent about sexism, and had hired a senior lawyer to look at how it handles sexual harassment cases.

"I do believe the culture has changed since the '70s and '80s," Entwistle said. "But I'm not convinced it has changed as much as it should have."

He said Savile had been "a very skillful and successful sexual predator who covered his tracks."

"These things are institutionally, it seems, very difficult to deal with," he said.
