Study: Indoor Tanning Linked With Early Onset of Skin Cancer (Time.com)

Given that indoor tanning beds were officially classified as a human carcinogen in 2009 -- up there with cigarettes and asbestos -- it should be fairly obvious that frequent tanning-booth exposure would increase your risk of skin cancer.

Indeed, the evidence linking indoor tanning with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, one of the more common forms of the disease, is "convincing," according to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. But the research concerning tanning beds and basal cell carcinoma, the third and most frequent major type of skin cancer -- which accounts for some 80% of all skin cancer cases in the U.S. -- has thus far been inconsistent. (See pictures of a photographer's intimate account of her mother's cancer ordeal.)

Basal cell carcinoma, a slow-growing cancer, has traditionally been a disease of middle age. But it's been appearing with increasing frequency in people under 40, especially in women -- a demographic that also happens to like indoor tanning -- suggesting a link. So researchers at the Yale School of Public Health sought to study the association.

The study included 376 people under 40, who had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma between 2006 and 2010. They were matched with a control group of 390 dermatology patients who were diagnosed with minor skin conditions like cysts and warts. All participants had skin biopsies, and all were drawn from a Yale University database.

The researchers interviewed each participant about their UV exposure -- both in tanning beds and outdoors. They also asked about their history of sunburns, sunscreen use, family history of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and their self-reported eye, skin and hair color.

The conclusion: people who had ever used a tanning booth were 69% more likely to develop early-onset basal cell carcinoma than never tanners. Those who used tanning booths more regularly -- for at least six years -- were more than twice a likely to develop basal cell carcinoma, compared with never tanners.

The study found that women were far more devoted than men to indoor tanning, which might help explain why 70% of all early onset basal cell carcinomas occur in females. The authors concluded that about 27% of cases of early onset disease -- including 43% of cases in women -- could be prevented if people simply stopped using tanning booths.

That's a tall order, considering that some 30 million Americans use indoor tanning beds each year. Policy changes, such as the recent California ban on teen tanning, may help, the authors suggest. So would behavioral interventions aimed at women -- at least one study in 2010 found that the best way to get young women to tan less was to warn them about the skin-wrinkling effects of tanning-bed exposure, not the risk of skin cancer.

"Importantly, indoor tanning is a behavior that individuals can change. In conjunction with the findings on melanoma, our results for [basal cell carcinoma] indicate that reducing indoor tanning could translate to a meaningful reduction in the incidence of these two types of skin cancer," said Leah M. Ferrucci, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Public Health, in a statement.

DJ sues Mermaid supper club over assault by drunken wedding guest

It was supposed to be a joyous wedding celebration. But when the DJ did not immediately play a request from the groom's nephew, things turned violent.

That was Oct. 30, 2010. On Thursday, disc jockey John Wirtz sued the Mermaid supper club in Mounds View and its parent company, Moundsvista Inc., along with assailant Nick Villarreal, alleging Villarreal was served liquor at the wedding reception after he was already "obviously" drunk.

That violates state law.

Villarreal, 26, of Lake Elmo pleaded guilty in June in Ramsey County District Court to third-degree assault and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.

The lawsuit, filed in Ramsey County District Court, alleges that Wirtz's injuries were a direct result of Villarreal's intoxication. It also alleges that the Mermaid "failed to take appropriate steps to safeguard (Wirtz) and remove (Villarreal) from the premises."

The attorney for the Mermaid did not return a call seeking comment late Thursday. A working number for Villarreal could not be obtained.

Wirtz, 46, incurred losses from his injuries of more than $50,000, the suit says.

The lawsuit does not describe the disagreement between the two men.

But the criminal complaint charging Villarreal with assault said Villarreal asked Wirtz to play some Latin music for his grandmother.

Wirtz said he would do so after he took care of other requests.

After some time, Villarreal returned to complain about the delay.

Wirtz told police that Villarreal

grabbed him, "punched him in the face from behind, pulled his head back and then hit him a number of times in the face," the complaint said. Other wedding guests stopped the assault.

By the time police arrived, Villarreal had been escorted out by relatives and friends, the complaint said.

Initially, officers did not know who assaulted Wirtz. Relatives refused to tell police his last name or where he could be found.

According to medical records, Wirtz had a broken eye socket and required 11 stitches in his face.

Villarreal told police the next month that he had arrived at the reception late and had noticed his grandmother was on the verge of tears; she said the DJ would not play Mexican music, even though she had asked him to earlier.

Madrid's first woman mayor takes office

Barcelona News.Net
Tuesday 27th December, 2011 (IANS)

Ana Botella, the wife of former Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar, was sworn-in Tuesday as Madrid's first woman mayor.

She succeeds Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, mayor of the capital since 2003, who resigned to serve as justice minister in the new government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Botella, 58, became a member of the city council in 2003, during her husband's 1996-2004 tenure as prime minister, but has been active in the conservative Popular Party (PP) since 1978.

She occupied the second spot on the PP ticket in the May 22 municipal elections that gave Ruiz-Gallardon a third consecutive term as capital mayor.

In her first speech as mayor, Botella pledged to govern the city with austerity tempered by concern for the poor, the elderly, the unemployed and people living on the margins of society.

Botella, whose swearing-in ceremony was attended by six members of Rajoy's Cabinet, said she will soon implement a 'specific plan to contain spending' by the municipal government.

She faces the challenge of dealing with a municipal debt of 6.35 billion euros ($8.25 billion), the legacy of big projects undertaken by Ruiz-Gallardon, who led an unsuccessful bid to bring the 2012 Olympics to Madrid.

The new mayor will also have to come up with a way to bring the capital's air-quality up to European Union standards.

Adele Notches Best Sales Year Since Usher's Confessions

In 2011, 21 moved more than 5.6 million copies in the U.S.
By Gil Kaufman

The music industry has been stuck in a rut for nearly a decade. But every once in a while, it still manages to produce one of those unstoppable hit albums that give everyone that good old feeling.

This year's model is Adele's 21, which not only sold more copies than any other album in the U.S. in 2011 (more than 5.6 million to date), but which has also moved the most units of any artist since 2004. According to a Reuters report, those gaudy figures (which top 15 million worldwide) make the British songbird the first artist to cross the 5 million mark in one year since Usher did it with his fourth studio album, Confessions, which sold 7.9 million units more than seven years ago.

And to think she did it by releasing just two mega singles, "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You," and barely touring North America due to recurring vocal issues.

There have been other big hits along the way to Adele's mark, including Eminem selling more than 3.4 million copies of his comeback Recovery album last year and Taylor Swift taking the honors in 2009 with Fearless, which sold 3.2 million copies. But none have come as close to Usher's mark in the interim.

There doesn't seem to be any chance Adele will be surpassed by the end of the year: The closest contenders are Lady Gaga's Born This Way (2.08 million) and Michael Bublé's Christmas (2.4 million). The other good news is that overall music sales are expected to be up slightly (3 percent) by the end of this year, marking the first time that's happened since 2004.

HP TouchPad Go gets reviewed, but remains already long gone (video)

While we already rode the white unicorns of HP's now disintegrated webOS series, there was one little filly we didn't get to saddle up. A developmental model of the seven-inch TouchPad Go has now made it into the hands of webOSnation and has been given a thorough going over. The major differences from its bigger brother? A rear-facing 5 megapixel camera and a smudge buffering matte finish on the back are the main signifiers. Aside from those (and an experimental build of the next firmware update), it's a tiny TouchPad. The Go matches the resolution of the original, also packing the same processor innards of the defunct white TouchPad. Those unwilling to accept the future of webOS can still absorb the full critique of what could have been in a video review after the break.

India resume first innings after lunch

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir resumed the Indian first innings after lunch against Australia on Day 2 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. (AFP Photo)

NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag resumed the Indian first innings after lunch on the second day of the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Scorecard

Gambhir and Sehwag took the Indian first innings to 6/0 at lunch.

Earlier, Zaheer Khan took four wickets and Umesh Yadav and R Ashwin scalped three each as India bowled out Australia for 333 runs in their first innings.

The last Australian wicket fell when Nathan Lyon was bowled round his legs by Ashwin.

Australia lost their ninth wicket when R Ashwin had Ben Hilfenhaus caught by Virat Kohli at long-on.

Zaheer Khan took his fourth wicket when he had Peter Siddle caught behind by MS Dhoni.

Siddle played well to score 41 runs but fell to Zaheer who was reversing the ball both ways.

Zaheer had Brad Haddin caught by Virender Sehwag at gully in the second over of the day.

Zaheer broke the stubborn 72-run stand between Haddin and Peter Siddle as Sehwag took a good low catch.

The day's play started with Haddin and Siddle resuming the Australian first innings.

Australia ended Day 1 at 277/6 after being 205/5 at one stage.

Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, both playing under the shadow of recent injuries and lay-offs, struggled with their line and length under an overcast sky on a moisture-laden pitch that aided lateral movement when the ball was pitched up.

The hosts opened with debutant Ed Cowan and the belligerent David Warner who were off to a steady start after skipper Michael Clarke won the toss and surprised many by choosing to bat first.

Cowan betrayed no nerves and displayed a fine defensive technique and the right temperament to succeed in Test cricket.

Warner made a sketchy 37 that included a breath-taking pull for six off Umesh Yadav and several airy-fairy shots. He was out off the first ball after a brief rain-induced stoppage at the stroke of the first hour of play when he top-edged a Yadav bouncer that ballooned up to Dhoni behind the stumps.

Shaun Marsh, who has usurped Ricky Ponting's No. 3 position, hardly did justice to the promotion when his intended off-drive off Yadav flew to point, where Virat Kohli held a low catch.

Ponting received a warm welcome from the fans and a hot one from Yadav. The Indian pacer tested the Aussie great with a well-directed bouncer. Ponting, who was late in reacting, was struck just above his elbow and on the grille of his helmet before he regained his bearings and managed to kick the ball away from close to his stumps.

The former Australian captain struggled right through his innings of 62 in the course of which he got beaten several times, overbalanced on a couple of occasions but hung in there to raise 113 runs for the third wicket with the dormant Cowan.

The duo made the Indian pacers pay for their lack of length in the post-lunch session that was delayed by around 40 minutes because of yet another spell of light rain. Just when frustration was creeping into the Indian ranks, Ponting departed much like he had started: a touch shakily. Yadav, having softened him up with a snorter that Ponting somehow managed to evade, got his next delivery to move away late and the batsman edged it to Laxman at second slip.

Clarke, who looked fluent in making a sparkling 31 with five crisply struck boundaries, added a further 46 runs in association with Cowan, but gifted Zaheer his wicket dragging a short ball on to his stumps.

"Mission: Impossible" cruises to top of box office

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" cruised to No. 1 at box offices on Sunday, even as major new movies opened on Christmas Day which may change top 10 results when final numbers are tallied.

The new Tom Cruise movie rang up an estimated $26.5 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates, after expanding from a limited release in Imax and other large-screen theaters last week.

Paramount Pictures, which released the movie, said it expects a four-day tally of slightly more than $40 million by Monday, when final estimates are reported. The film's cumulative ticket sales are expected to reach just over $72 after Monday.

Indeed, the weekend box office race truly will finish on Monday because Christmas day annually is among the most crowded days in theaters and on Sunday, director Steven Spielberg's widely-anticipated "War Horse" makes its debut along with another newcomer, thriller "The Darkest Hour."

Hollywood's major studios loaded the release schedule last week heading into the holiday, expecting the films to play well between now and New Year's Eve while parents and kids are away from work and school. As a result, a clear picture of how the movie studios fared this Christmas season awaits the full week of box office reports.

Meanwhile, over the weekend Warner Bros' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" took the No. 2 spot on U.S. and Canadian (domestic) box office charts with $17.8 million, according to Sunday's estimates. Cumulative ticket sales for "Sherlock" after two weeks now stand at roughly $76.5 million.

Another holdover from last week, family comedy "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" squeaked into No. 3 with $13.3 million, pushing its total domestic ticket sales to $50.3 million after two weeks in theaters.

Following it were a trio of last week's newcomers, widely-anticipated "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," family film "The Adventures of Tintin" and comedy "We Bought A Zoo."

"Dragon Tattoo" landed at No. 4 on Sunday with $13 million, a hair behind the chipmunks, and a Sony spokesman cautioned the studio's figure could change when Sunday's figures are final.

"Today and tomorrow should be our strongest days of the holiday frame," the spokesman said, noting that the studio did not have a Monday estimate.

"Dragon Tattoo" now has estimated total domestic ticket sales of $21.4 million since its debut.

"Tintin," another Spielberg film released by Paramount, landed at No. 5 over the weekend with $9.1 million. The studio sees it rising to $14.3 million after Monday. Total ticket sales by Monday are seen at $22.3 million since its debut.

Finally, another new entry this weekend, the comedy "We Bought a Zoo," landed at No. 6 with $7.8 million.

Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc. Warner Bros. is part of Time Warner Inc.. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released by the movie studio division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp. "Chipwrecked" and "Zoo" were both released by film divisions of 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp..

South Africa hopes to lure world?s top astronomers

Africa, the birthplace of the human species, has long been a magnet for archeologists.

Now South Africa wants to draw leading astrophysicists to the continent as well with the world?s most powerful radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), an instrument that would be able to look back to the infancy of the universe.

South Africa and Australia are the two finalists in the competition to host the project, which will eventually link thousands of radio dishes to make a massive antenna with a total surface area of 1km2.

The telescope, the brainchild of an international consortium of scientists, will be 50 to 100 times more sensitive than today?s best radio telescopes and is projected to cost in the neighborhood of US$2 billion.

Like an archeologist digging into ever deeper layers of soil, the telescope will pick up radio waves from deeper in space than ever before, ones whose sources are billions of years old and might not even exist anymore.

Scientists say that power will help them look back in time and see how the universe took shape after the big bang.

For African astronomers, next year will be decisive.

Scientists will decide by early March whether the South African and Australian SKA site proposals pass muster. The consortium will then choose the winner, a decision the South Africans say will be political and economic as well as scientific.

South Africa also plans to start construction next year on a 64-antenna radio telescope called MeerKAT that would be one of the five most accurate in the world.

Observation slots at the MeerKAT are already fully booked for its first five years.

A prototype, the KAT-7, is up and running in the Karoo, an arid expanse of sparsely inhabited land stretched across South Africa?s western side.

The government has said the site, a silent, rocky landscape that looks like a western movie cast with a few sheep, a ?Radio Astronomy Reserve.?

The site, which had no trace of human settlement eight years ago, is an hour by road from the nearest town, itself an hour?s flight from Cape Town. Like giant white saucers turned to the sky, seven dish antennas capture the noise of the universe with a small, refrigerator-like hum.

?It is a very difficult place to do farming,? said Justin Jonas, an astronomer and engineer and the operating director for SKA Africa. ?Which is good for us. It means the fewest people, fewest cellphones and fewest interferences.?

South Africa?s SKA bid would also put the core of antennas in the Karoo.

Other antennas would be scattered around the continent in Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia.

Design and pre-construction on the SKA are scheduled to begin in 2013. The project is expected to be finished sometime near 2024.

It is not an ideal time to be raising money for massive science projects. The US pulled out of the SKA last year, leaving it to Australia, Britain, China, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands and South Africa to fund. India is still on the fence.

However, South Africa is undeterred. It says it can build the SKA for less money than Australia, which would co-host with New Zealand.

The government has already invested 635 million rand (US$75 million) in seven years to build MeerKAT and plans to spend another 500 million rand a year to 2016.

?With a project like this, you don?t make money, but you get a lot more. You develop scientific capacity,? said Nadeem Oozeer, 36, a researcher from Mauritius. ?In Mauritius, we?ve got five graduates with terminal [doctorate] degrees. Why not an African Nobel prize winner??

Pantry gets food to pets of needy seniors | Boise, Garden City ...

Bobbie Gardner is an animal lover who is allergic to dogs and cats. She no longer owns pets, but she knows firsthand that they are cherished companions for many.

The Boise grandma is part of a group of volunteers trying to prevent homebound seniors in the Treasure Valley from losing their pets because they can?t afford to feed them. Once a month, she loads up her Suzuki with bags of donated pet food and delivers it to a half-dozen or more residents in Boise and Meridian.

?They?re very appreciative,? said Gardner, a nurse who works part time. ?They say it?s so important to them to keep their animals with them, and if we didn?t help them they wouldn?t be able to.?

The pet food delivery service ? run through the Idaho Humane Society ? is done in collaboration with Elks Meals on Wheels. Volunteers with Meals on Wheels deliver meals each day to 800 seniors in Ada County, including 400 homebound seniors and 400 at dining centers.

?For many of these people who receive Meals on Wheels, it is their only daily source of nutrition,? said Grant Jones, development director for Elks Meals on Wheels. ?It?s very critical that they eat all of that and that they don?t have to make a choice between themselves and their pet.?

The Idaho Humane Society has been assisting with pet food donation for needy seniors for years. In late 2008, the nonprofit launched a separate delivery service to ease the burden on Meals on Wheels volunteers.

?It was just asking them to do a lot extra. In some cases, that pet food is very heavy, very bulky,? Jones said. ?It just made it easier.?

At about the same time, shelter officials began to notice that many families were giving up their pets due to financial hardship.

?We determined that people were using food stamps to buy food for their pets ? tuna for their cats, little wieners for their dogs,? said Christine Wiersema, development director at the Idaho Humane Society. ?That?s taking food away from the family, so that?s not good.

?We reassessed things because we want to keep these families together,? Wiersema said. That?s when the shelter?s Pet Food Pantry was launched.

The pantry, housed in a construction trailer, is also a collection site for the Meals on Wheels pet food delivery service. They collect and distribute about 7,000 pounds of pet food a month.

?This could be my whole job,? Wiersema said. All of the food is donated by the community or purchased with cash donations.

There are pet food donation drop-offs at 60 locations in the Valley, including Zamzows stores and veterinary offices.

Some businesses hold food drives to help out. The Idaho Athletic Club held four drives this year and donated 10,000 pounds of pet food. Hewlett-Packard employees contributed 640 pounds and $780 in cash.

Twice a month, about 100 families pick up food to feed for up to four pets. They may receive the donated pet food for up to six months.

The Meals on Wheels pet food delivery service is separate from the food pickup operation. It currently provides food to 225 animals at residences throughout Ada County.

About 10 to 15 volunteers gather the first week of the month to pack the pet food into their vehicles. They spend an hour or two delivering it over the next day or so.

Wiersema said many of the seniors in the delivery program have older and/or special-needs pets. Grants from two foundations allow the shelter to offer medical treatment and other care for those animals.

While talking to one pet owner, volunteer Gardner discovered that he was living in frigid temperatures due to a broken furnace. She called local agencies and businesses until she found one that would work with him on a payment plan for a new furnace.

In that way, the pet food delivery service is about so much more than pets, Wiersema said.

?It?s just one more touch from the community ? that sense we can all take care of each other,? she said.

Great value as an economy laptop computer. I bought this computer as an upgrade to an old netbook I've been dragging around since May of 2009. I do most of my work on my desktop computer, but I've been very impressed with this computer in the three weeks I've had it.For having the lower-end Intel chip, it is very fast at performing the things I like to do with it (having 12+ tabs open in several Chrome windows, iTunes, work in Word, Excel, and OneNote). I'm often doing these at the same time and it doesn't miss I beat. I know this isn't exactly power computing, but it's about all I ever need to do on my laptop.I did notice that it would sometimes freeze and require a hard restart upon resuming from sleep. I wonder if that is the cursor issue the other reviewer was experiencing; that is what I thought I was encountering at first. Instead, I did a little reading online and discovered that the default Dell settings for powering down the harddrive before sleep could cause the freeze on resume from sleep. I changed the power settings to not turn the harddrive off until sleep and I haven't had an issue.Considering the relatively small battery, I was also impressed with the battery life. I've been able to get 3 to 4 hours of use per charge with the display settings held to a low level of brightness.Overall for under $500 with Office included, I thought this was a fantastic buy. 07/26/2011

great computer for college student, includes office programs, smaller size fits in backpack with books, love it 07/25/2011

Good computer for the price After my Mac got water damaged after 5 years of ownership I wasn't really in the market for an expensive replacement computer... all I really needed was Microsoft Word and Excel to get through my last year of college. I found this computer at my local store and thought for having Office pre-loaded it was a very good value. I have had this computer for about a month now and I am very happy with it. I have had the cursor jump while using Word..but I use a wireless mouse and I don't seem to have the issue. I feel like I got a good computer for the price paid. I also enjoy being able to change the lid. 07/31/2011

Excellent laptop for the price! Great industry-standard laptop! Solid build, good equipment, Dell didn't fill it with useless software and utilities. Has some awesome quick-keys to access utility functions (like turning wireless on and off).Only problem I've had is it tends to take a while to boot. Haven't identified why yet, doesn't seem to be anything in particular bogging it down, but 60% of boots take double the time it should... I'll amend the post if I find the reason.Other than that, GREAT. Love it so-far, it's sleek and fun, and every cost-effective. 08/08/2011

Coldplay news Coldplay have been voted the 'Best Rock Band' of 2011 in Digital Spy's end of year poll. The continued, saying that Coldplay beat runners-up Foo Fighters by a considerable margin on the tally, in which over 100,000 votes were cast. Leicester rockers Kasabian took third place. Elsewhere on the poll, Bruno Mars won 'Best Male Artist', ahead of Ed Sheeran and Will Young, who took spots two and three respectively.

The Wanted were named 'Best Pop Group' of the year, beating One Direction at two and The Saturdays at three. X Factor winners Little Mix took fifth position, below JLS and above Take That. Coldplay released their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto in October this year. It topped the charts in over 11 countries and has already been certified platinum in the UK.

Digital Spy also commented that Chris Martin recently claimed that he felt the group was hated by the world, adding: "Some people misconstrue our band just to be a commercial venture. They question the soulfulness of Coldplay because we've done okay."

Reasons to like Coldplay: Calgary Herald offer some festive cheer with a seasonal article

Topic articles
articles Offering some festive cheer in the way of a Coldplay article (and almost previewing their forthcoming show on April 18th) are the Calgary Herald, who write this entitled 'Reasons to like Coldplay'. After you've got past the U2 comparisons and the Gwyneth references that invades most Coldplay articles these days, we couldn't think of a better way to say merry Christmas than this. So enjoy the article and... merry Christmas!

In 2008, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin famously told the U.K. newspaper The Daily Express that rock ?n? roll ? Coldplay?s brand of it, anyway ? was a young man?s game.

?I?m 31 now and I don?t think that bands should keep going past 33,? he said at the time. Martin is now 34. The same goes for guitarist Jonny Buckland. Bandmates Guy Berryman and Will Champion are both 33 ? although we?re not anxiously awaiting news of their imminent retirement. (The October release of Coldplay?s latest album, Mylo Xyloto, and a subsequent tour announcement, would suggest that?s altogether unlikely.)

For the many who picked up Mylo Xyloto this fall ? shooting it to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in its first week ? they?re no doubt ecstatic that Martin isn?t entirely a man of his word. Had Coldplay entered early retirement, they never would have appeared at London?s iTunes festival this year, for instance ? and highlights from that performance were captured in today?s featured download, Coldplay?s iTunes festival: London 2011 EP. (And they certainly wouldn?t be playing a sold-out show in Calgary April 18.)

Coldplay's Oracle on the X Stage, elephant costumes, and what 'should' happen when you get your Xyloband home...

December 22, 2011 - submitted by Mallory, United Kingdom
Q. Are you going to let some fans win those elephant costumes used in Paradise as a competition ? xxxx
The Oracle replies:
Er, no, we're not. Those costumes weren't bespoke by the way, they were hired from a regular fancy dress hire firm and that's why you will sometimes see other people at concerts wearing the exact same ones.

December 22, 2011 - submitted by Jochen, Germany
Q. Yesterday I was witnessing my most impressive concert in lifetime (being 44 years old and going to live venues quite regularly) at Festhalle/Frankfurt. As a matter of fact, we didn't receive the magic wristband which is quite a shame because I would love to have a memorabilia. Is there any chance to receive it officially and not just via ebay?
The Oracle replies:
I'm afraid you can see the problem I would have here if I said "yeah no problem, I can send you one". Firstly, there aren't any spare to send out to individuals and secondly, that may encourage people who weren't actually at a gig to ask me for a wristband ... not that I would dare to accuse anyone of lying in such a way bit hey, you never know! Don't waste your money on one from ebay either, it's not like it does ANYTHING at all once you get it home. [although there may be some with a mind of their own...]

Coldplay Roadie #42 - Blog #161 (working on a NEW song!)

Topic Journal
Journal Check out coldplay.com for a new blog entry: Coldplay round off the tour in Berlin by working on a brand new song

Discuss this blog entry in the Coldplay forum here onwards [thanks _Tash]

I hadn?t thought about it until Chris mentioned it on the B-stage. He thanks the Frankfurt crowd and mentions that Germany is where this tour really started, back on Rock im Park all those months ago. Fitting then, that we bring the show back here just before we break for Christmas.

I don?t think there can be anyone not going home from this tour not feeling as though they?ve been hit by a truck (or indeed, by a dozen of them, or however many it is we?re up to now). It?s been an utterly bonkers six or seven months, but looking at the way the record has been taken to people?s hearts and how joyous the shows are, you can?t help but conclude it?s been worthwhile.

I?m going to keep this one brief. Primarily because in the rush to get out of the back door in the runner to the airport, I left my memory card in my camera, which means all my photographic evidence from the past few days is on a truck to Abu Dhabi. (I promise I?ll dig a few things out for you once we hit new year.)

I should probably tell you that we had a rather interesting soundcheck in Berlin today, with a bunch of files finding their way over the internet to me from the studio for the fellas to work on before doors. It?s not a song that?s likely to be in the set for a good while. I?d say that once they?ve finished writing and recording it though, it?s got a good chance?

Coldplay Roadie #42 - Blog #161 (Twinkle Twinkle little stars, look how they shine for you...)

Journal Check out coldplay.com for a new blog entry: Roadie #42, the errant smoke machine and the soundcheck experiments

Discuss this blog entry in the Coldplay forum here onwards [thanks _Tash]

I?ve got to be honest, I was expecting the Rotterdam audience to be somewhat - um, ?laid back? I guess is the right phrase. It just goes to show that you never can tell?

It?s a good noisy crowd that sing through the show at the Ahoy - none more so than when the band are on the B-Stage and the cheer for Will during Us Against The World is so huge that the song grinds to a halt amidst disbelieving giggles on stage.

Meanwhile, *underneath* the stage shortly later, things go similarly silly just before Clocks when it becomes clear that an errant smoke machine has been kicked and is now facing in the wrong direction. Rather than fill the stage with smoke for the lasers, it instead fills the entire under-stage corridor with thick smoke. I can hardly see the computer screen in front of me and begin wafting the smoke out of the side curtain with a clipboard in either hand.

Charlie Brown video due in the new year, will not feature nudity despite media excitement
Posted by?busybeeburns?on?Tuesday, December 20, 2011 - 10:50 AM (1860&nbspReads)
Topic Coldplay news
Coldplay news More fall out now from the Charlie Brown video shoot, as The Sun continue with their series of articles drip-feeding us with information from the event. Their latest one reads like this: "Coldplay are hard taskmasters. Girls who applied to feature in the video for the band's forthcoming single, Charlie Brown, had to dance for EIGHT HOURS caked in luminous make-up. Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion made up for the gruelling day's work though. They footed the bill for lunch at the pub next door to the church in Brentford, West London, where filming took place ? then sorted a free bar. Doubt the boozer had much Red Bull left."

It seems like the media are getting very excited about the video, the internet is full of reports that Coldplay hired 'topless ladies' to feature in their new video for single 'Charlie Brown'. However, the maker of the Xylobands, Jason Regler, who has been involved in the video shoot from a glowband perspective, tweeted this week that it wasn't as rauchy as the media would have liked (see below). He also said that the video would be released in the new year, and this matches the rumour that it is set to be released on 10 January 2012. More discussion on Charlie Brown, the single, and the video release is at the Charlie Brown sub-forum now.

Chris Martin interview with The Sun as Mylo Xyloto is chosen as the paper's no.1 album of the year
Posted by?busybeeburns?on?Sunday, December 18, 2011 - 10:05 PM (1955&nbspReads)
Topic Coldplay news
Coldplay news The Sun Newspaper's Friday Entertainment Section, alternatively known as Something For The Weekend, or TheSunSFTW, as seen on Twitter, has published an article interview with Chris Martin following news that they have chosen Mylo Xyloto as SFTW's no.1 album of the year. Read on for the article, entitled 'I don't know who bribed you but we're very grateful'...

The unusually titled Mylo Xyloto ? the fifth album from music giants Coldplay ? was the sound of a band with a new confidence. And it's rightfully Something For The Weekend's number one album of 2011. "We're SFTW album of the year ? that's fucking incredible. Come on!" shouts Chris Martin down the phone, en route to a show in Paris. "I don't know who bribed you and I can't believe we beat Adele. But it's definitely not because of our album title because no one can still pronounce it!" he laughs.

(For the record, it is pronounced My-low Zy-letoe). Anyone who saw Coldplay on tour this year, whether headlining Glastonbury in June or on The X Factor last week, knows the band are at their peak live. "I think the success of this album comes from a group of friends who are very tight at the moment," explains Chris. "The moment we had to play Glastonbury it was a boot up the backside because that's the closest we get to a home crowd. We worked extra hard knowing we had to headline it...

December 15, 2011 - submitted by Giulia, Germany
Q. I see that Emeli Sande has done the openings for some of Coldplay's concerts recently. Do you know whether she will do the same for the summer 2012 concerts (I would love to see her at the September concerto in Munich). Thanks!
The Oracle replies:
It's not usual for the support slots to do more than one leg (yes, I know that Bat For Lashes did but that was a Latin American tour sometime after the initial run). I think Emeli will be very busy doing her own tours anyway. Did you know that yesterday it was announced yesterday that she has won the Brits Critics Choice award. Congratulations Emeli!

Q. Hi Oracle, Can you tell me what song the guys were playing at the rehearsal for Ellen. It's the one that Ellen interrupted when she popped up in front of Chris at the piano. Cheers
The Oracle replies:
I'm stumped! I have listened but I just do not know if it's an impromptu jam or an actual song. Sorry but I don't recognize it at all. I shall ask...

Coldplay round-up: Stephen Fry thanks Chris Martin, fake Manila tour date, You Me At Six praise

Coldplay news Stephen Fry [pictured] has Coldplay frontman Chris Martin to thank for his role in the new Sherlock Holmes sequel, the film's director has revealed to the Press Association this week. Chris is an avid fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, and thought TV presenter and raconteur Stephen would be perfect to play the sleuth's brother Mycroft in Guy Ritchie's film Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows.

At a press conference to promote the film with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, who play Holmes and Watson, Guy said: "Robert and I, we have a mutual friend, Chris Martin out of Coldplay, he's a Sherlockian. He's very enthusiastic about the whole thing, like Stephen Fry, and it was his idea. I think he told Robert first." Robert quipped: "Every good idea in this movie came from Chris Martin."

And Guy revealed Stephen had no qualms about appearing naked in one scene in the film, which also features Robert dressed up in drag. "I thought it was going to be an issue when we presented him with the pages and it says he's naked. But then he turned up on the day naked and there was no great resistance, rather like getting Robert into a dress. I've got a sneaky suspicion it could've been his idea, anyway, he turned up to work without any clothes." [More on this article is at the messageboard now (thanks Mimixxx)]

Following the directions from the car park to the video shoot location, I pass the pub that?s noted on the map. I look in the windows to see if there?s anyone I recognise in there. The pub is completely awash with folks covered in luminous paint. Clearly I?m getting close.

They?re quite a striking sight, all crazy hairdos, raving outfits and glow in the dark splashes - yet they?re all sat quietly chatting, drinking and reading the paper like it?s the most normal thing in the world. I have to wonder what the old fella in the corner who?s nipped in for a quiet lunchtime half is thinking.

The shoot site itself is classic Mat Whitecross. I trudge in over the mud and into a very musty abandoned old wreck. It?s about the least glamorous location you can imagine, but you can instantly see it?s going to look great...

Back in 2002, very shortly after I joined the Coldplay travelling circus, we found ourselves in a tiny club in San Francisco. I remember the soundcheck having been somewhat eventful, almost ending in fisticuffs over nothing of any great import. Shortly before showtime, I dived into the dressing room to clarify something about the setlist. Chris was in mid-stream, giving an impassioned monologue - to whom exactly, I don?t remember - I was more concerned with getting the information I needed without interrupting.

As I left though, I caught a phrase that he was hammering emphatically. ??It?s still all about bringing passionate music into the mainstream, which is what we?ve always been about??

The phrase came back (somewhat shortened) minutes later when the intro tape finished and they smashed into Politik. Chris yelped the phrase over the opening chords (he used to yell all manner of random stuff at the start of that tune back in the day I seem to remember).

Coldplay's X Factor performance thrusts flashing 'Xylobands' into the world spotlight

Coldplay news Coldplay have replaced the rock tradition of illuminating the stadium with lighters and mobile phones during big anthems by handing out radio-controlled glow bands, the Daily Mail writes today, in a mini-review of Coldplay's X Factor performance on Sunday night. Below is the rest of the article. If you want to watch Coldplay on the X Factor again click here, and if you want to download the performance head to the Multimedia forum [thanks Denise, timyyy & Mojo Pin]

The band gave out 10,000 of the multi-coloured wrist bands to the audience when they played in the final X Factor show at Wembley last night. They performed two songs from their new Mylo Xyloto album, while the innovative new bands lit up and flashed in time to the music.

"It?s like asking everyone to hold their mobile phones up without having to ask," said Chris Martin. They also handed out 20,000 wristbands, called Xylobands, to everyone at the O2 arena at the weekend, where they played as part of their December tour. The LED light bands worked during four songs at the O2 gig when people would normally have waved lighters. It looked absolutely amazing to see everyone wearing them and the whole stadium lit up,? said Claire Adams, 36, from London.
